Cemetery
Howdy Fellow Walker shooters, I was just wondering what some of you might have done to the loading lever so that it doesn't drop every time you pull the trigger. I remember seeing a leather craftsman who had some sort of lever wrap, but I don't remember who it was..... Need to come up with something to wrap around it and the barrel, right now I'm using wire, but it doesn't like to stay put.
Cypress Sam, SASS #10915
A rubber band works well but is not very historically accurate. You can also change the angle of the point where the latch engages the lever to make it harder to open the lever. Don't make the angle too sharp though or you'll have to pries open the lever. With my Walker, the lever pops open with full loads of 50 gr fffg but not with 30 gr fffg.
Doc Fill 'Em 67797
I've seen some use a black rubber O-ring around the barrel and lever.
Abilene Slim SASS 81783
Just curious Cemetery, do you shoot that cannon with one hand or two? At 5 lbs, it's quite the beast!
Marshal Phil DeGrave SASS #55202
I have used electrical tape. Works well till it starts to melt. The only way to shoot Walkers is GUNFIGHTER. Load em up heavy, let the recoil send the front end up, pull the trigger when the front sights "fall" onto the target.
Chaos Jumbles SASS # 51076
I use a piece of leather shoe sting tied at tight as possible. They do sometime slide off the end of the barrel, but easy and cheap to make a new one. Also could use a piece of an old bandana (sp??) as a period correct method. Creekside
I have a Uberti and it wont drop the lever on 30 gr loads but it will if I go hotter then that Keeping the wedge tight also helps some but 30 gr is plenty to ring steel and punch holes in paper My 3 rd mod Dragoon will drop the lever with hot loads also (just sayin )

Chantry
Heh. I had this come up a couple of weeks ago in a conversation with one of the early cowboy shooters who did Mountain Man before SASS and he gave me perhaps the simplest answer: Tighten the loading level screw really tight. I haven't had a chance to try it yet though
long tall texan
A friend I shoot with uses a single loop of wire with the twist below the lever. He slides it forward to load, and slides it back to shoot. I've never seen it fail.
Pulp, SASS#28319
Sometime 'twixt charging and going to the loading table to cap, just take the thing off. Heck, it's only one screw.
Dalton Masterson, SASS #51139
I have never had any troubles with the lever dropping all the way down, as it kind of binds when it comes down about an inch or so. I also only shoot 45gr loads in it. So then, I found a spare barrel and lever, so I cut the spare barrel shorter and modified the lever to be work without attaching it. Great fun and much better balance. DM Photo..
Cpt Dan Blodgett, SASS #75655
Might help to hire a gunbearer to carry them around for you. They were called horse pistols for a reason.

Duh, How come I never thought of that?? Is that a legal mod?? Of course, I would lose the screw or maybe the whole thing. I have only been fighting with the thing for three or four years now. Flint 976
An authentic mod is to add a dovetail lug and use a Dragoon lever.
