H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619
I have a question here for fellow Winchester 95 shooters. I have one in .30-40 Krag, and the rifling can best be described as looking like a corkscrew going down the barrel. I have never seen this tight of a twist in any other rifle. Even my Springfield Krags have have a much more conventional twist to them, as do modern reproductions of the 95 by Browning and the ersatz Winchesters made in Japan. Some questions... 1. Do all 95's have this really unusual rifling, or is it unique to the .30-40's? 2. What was/is the purpose of such a tight twist? I do find the rifle to be incredibly accurate with modern Remington jacketed factory ammo, and with my own reloads using a 185 grain lead bullet.
