Howdy:

I am looking at what it would cost (approximately) to convert a Ruger Blackhawk .357 Mag blued to a .38-40 - probably would entail a barrel and cylinder re-bore and a re-blue. I don't that this is an unusual conversion (well, perhaps it is, but I am certain I am not the first to see this as a possibility). Anyone have any ideas?

The Re-Blue may well not be necessary and it's the cheapest part if required. I am, however suggesting you send it to Ruger and have it re-barreled and the cylinder replaced. Probably the most reasonable price. If you can't get Ruger to do it, re-boring the cylinder and re-barrel is next up. I'd suggest you get a quote from Power Custom. Probably a couple hundred bucks.

Ruger made "Buckeye Specials" about 20 years ago. It's a convertible in 38-40/10mm. They generally run between $600-$700. They are on the Ruger forum and Gunbroker quite regularly. You could sell the 10mm cylinders, if you don't want them, and be into the guns for about the same as what you'd pay for a .357 Blackhawk. Plus, they have steel grip frames and not aluminum, like the regular Blackhawks.

A few years ago, I looked into converting a 357 Vaquero into 44-40. I don't remember the exact amount but seems like it was MUCH more than I expected!

I held on and found exactly what I wanted on GB.com.
