Rancho Roy
My brass and dies finally came in for my old 38-40 Winchester. The bullet mold arrived a few days ago. I cast up a bunch of 180g bullets and loaded ten rounds to see how the "sewer pipe" barrel would do. Not so good! Can you say "key holing"! There is a whole update on the entire 1873 Winchester project here: www.rvbprecision.com Hope you enjoy it!

Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283
Howdy One last question before you start cutting metal, did you slug the bore? Might be you need bigger bullets.
Virgil Ray Hality, SASS# 37355
Holy moly! That was the worst looking barrel innards I have ever seen! So, let us know how the relining went!
Rancho Roy
did you slug the bore? If you check out the pictures on the web site I posted, you would self answer this question. Not only is the bore totally corroded, it has a nasty ring half way up and the chamber is just a mass of rust. There really is nothing to slug........... Sergeant Smokepole #29248L
Slug the barrel. A friend has a .38WCF rifle that did the same thing. I slugged the barrel for him and it miked out at .410.. Remedy was simple. Bullets for the .41 Magnum...
Box Herder, SASS 73857
And add a soft bullet and some black powder- should shoot well.
Wrangler Jones, SASS # 64178
Those pix are pretty ugly! (of the bore; the rifle itself is GORGEOUS!)
John Boy
Roy, that bore though a sewer pipe needs a bullet with more bearing surface. Check out this RCBS mold and compare to the lack of bearing surface on the LEE TL401-175SWC. And cast the bullets with wheel weights in the Bhn 15 range. Softer alloy will only lead up the bore Alternate #1 http://media.midwayusa.com/productimages/medium/190/190595.jpg http://www.midwayusa.com/product/190595/rcbs-2-cavity-bullet-mold-40-180-fn-38-40-wcf-401-diameter-180-grain-flat-nose Alternate #2 If you feel you need a larger diameter to 'dig in' - Beagle the mold ... http://www.lasc.us/Brennan_4-0_ModifyCastBullets.htm Alternate #3 Call TJ's Enterprise and order a liner for the 38-40. Rancho Roy
If nothing else, you guys are extremely positive! Thanks for all the suggestions, but a barrel liner it will be. Ordered a Redman with the special drill from Brownells. Should be shooting dime size groups by next weekend!
Big Jake1001
If nothing else, you guys are extremely positive! Thanks for all the suggestions, but a barrel liner it will be. Ordered a Redman with the special drill from Brownells. Should be shooting dime size groups by next weekend! I bought a Winchester 1892 in 25-20 WCF for $110.00. It shot jacketed bullets OK, but not so good with lead bullets. I found out it had a bulge in the barrel 12 inches in a 24 inch barrel. I sent it to Redmans' in Washington for a reline job. I asked that he do it in 32-20 WCF so I could use it in SASS matches. It now shoots 10 shots in a Silver Dollar group at 50 yards. I'm sure your '73 will do as well if everything is done right. Nice looking Winchester 1873. You'll be able to shoot Smokeless and Black Powder out of it with a new liner. Big Jake
Cemetery
You might want to replace the togglelinks with modern repro's. I put these in both of my Winchesters; http://www.buffaloarms.com/Search.aspx?TERM=toggle%20links One of the original toggles broke on my after one match. Haven't had any problems with these.
