It looks like they are trying to make something original, and even though its not what anyone expected I thought they looked very fresh and interesting. Any opinions? Johnny Depp looks, the costume with the bird, makes him look more like a Voodo witch doctor, rather then a proud American indian warrior. Hope its a serious flick, but my gut feeling is that its going to be humerous, tongue in cheek western. Sorry, but Tontos costume is turning me off on this flick. MT Quote
Hardin Morningwood Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 The pic made me go "What the......" at first but then I harkened back to Depp's past characters and I think I need to give him the benefit of the doubt. He has a way of turning the "odd" into a very serious and memorable character. What struck me is that Armie Hammer (the Lone Ranger) really doesn't have a "look" that carries the sort of command that you would expect from a true western hero. Looks sickly and skiddish. Quote

When he did the "swishy/drunk/punk/Kieth Richards immitation" in the first 'Pirates' movies, they almost replaced him 30 daYS into the production. BIG fights with Bruckheimer and the creative team. They didnt and the rest is history. $3Billion in revenue...and counting. This is a 'tentpole' movie for Disney. It will appeal to everyone. They aint spending upwards of $350K and have it flop. Give it a break and wait and see. I grew up in Detroit and was there when it aired orignally on WXYZ-TV. MY favorite cowboy show by far. It will be different...and memorable thats for sure Quote

Therefore, there is historical precedent for his costume. I did not think it looked like a "voodoo" witch-doctor. (Pretty Shield, Medicine Woman of the Crows; p. 132) Also, I'm not terribly concerned with the costuming. I like the innovation. In the recent Dynamite comics version of the Lone Ranger, the Ranger acquires his blue costume over the course of the story. Nothing says these are the costumes they will wear through the entire movie. That said, the Ranger is defined not by his costume but by his dignity, manners, charity and self-discipline. More recent portrayals have struggled with the Ranger's "code" because it runs contrary to the nihilistic and antiheroic characters that dominate pop culture in general and modern westerns in particular. I actually like the costuming I see of the Lone Ranger if put in perspective and realism of the era. Sure I like the "B" western look that Clayton Moore embodied, and for many of us, it will be the image we relate to as the Lone Ranger. Remember, Lone Ranger original costume was black pants, and red shirt, and a single pistol. B/W TV and the serial, the costume was gray, black pants for serial. But in the real west, whats pictured is probable what he would be wearing. But, I do have problem with the Ranger Badge he is shown wearing. The Lone Ranger was a man of mystery, but the badghe will give him away. So why the mask? As to Tonto, and his part in the Legend of the Lone Ranger, he was not until the 12th episode of the original radio program introduced, and only so the Lone Ranger had someone to talk to to keep the program going. As to the headdress, at least research Tonto's origin and tribe and what they wore. From the books and radio program, the writers, yes, jumped back and forth, but 2 tribes are consistant and no others are give. Tonto is either Apache, or from the Potawatomi. So justifying a Sioux headress, and maybe just worn ceremonial, does not justify the look. Personally, Johnny Depp is a great actor, but the dress, costuming of his character is something hard for me, at the moment hard to accept. But he/she doesn't have to work at being charming – it comes easily. Everyone recognizes the Crow's easy energy, and everyone turns to the Crow for his/her ideas and opinions. This is because the Crow is both idealistic and diplomatic and is quite ingenious. In nurturing environments this Native American animal symbol is easy-going, can be romantic, and soft-spoken. Further, the crow can be quite patient, and intuitive in relationships. Left to his/her own devices, the Crow can be demanding, inconsistent, vindictive, and abrasive. Frankly, I don't see how it can't be an improvement over the original, which was pretty much a B reel aimed at kids. Besides, if you compare these with the outfits from the TV show, these look like a real improvement! I recall all the hand wringing on the wire about the remake of True Grit, how they were gonna ruin it and how could anyone think of remaking a John Wayne movie. But, the remake was great. I think I will forgo that for this film. I am just looking forward to seeing it when it comes out. Quote

Clarifying that after reading a few blogs and info makes it clearer and what direction its going. As Depp says, the Ranger will be his sidekick. My only thought on Depps comment, I always thought, and Clayton Moore made it clear that he would, and did treat Tonto with respect, it was the bad guys that disrespected Tonto.
