Can somebody explain the benefits of saddle seat pants for riding?

I'd bet they came about as a necessity rather than a fashion statement. Back in the day when the "Cowboy" spent a lot of time in the saddle, that is where the wear pattern was on the pants that he was wearing. Rather than buy a new pair of pants, I'm betting that he either sewed a patch in himself or hired it done by some lonely widder woman. This saved him from exposing more than he wanted and the cost of a new pair of pants.

YMMV

The saddle pants made by Wahmaker are not true to the originals. They are two sections sewn together but still only one thickness. The originals had a saddle seat sewn onto the pants for a double thickness. The original style would have covered the seam on the inside of the legs and crotch. I hope that makes sense. :)

I agree with royal that Wah-Maker's and the others are probably not true to the original designs. The idea was to put double thickness in the areas which made contact with the saddle to keep from rubbing holes through so easily after so many hours in the saddle.

If the material on the outside layer is made of suede or something, I could see where they may be of some help in aiding the rider to hold their seat better.

FWIW,

Thanks for the info.

To correctly ride in the seat for long duration's of time one needs to be able to slide with the rocking motion of the horse. Some saddles do have suede i.e. "Rodeo Cowboy Saddle" but "Ranch Saddlery" on the most part have smooth seats and slick forks hence

Here are two tips from someone that has done long distance rides. Both work. A thin padded bike short with chaminos inside that I lightly cover with "butt butter" (real name) OR I have ridden with (dont laugh) on cattle drives wearing a XXL pair of ladies pantyhouse under regular jeans. Its all about eliminating friction It works!

Can somebody explain the benefits of saddle seat pants for horse back riding?

I'm thinking that there wouldn't be an inside seam to rub against you.

And yes I'm going to use these for actual riding.

Well I was wrong until someone enlightened me. Try to keep and open mind sir. Learning is great. But it sometimes envolves checking ones ego at the class room door. Nothing I dreamed up. I'm just the messenger.

Here's one of the better wade saddle makers videos to explain. Here are the illustration pics to accompany the video.http://www.freckerssaddlery.com/saddle_questions.php

The benefits of saddle pants are;

1. It is a way for manufacturers to sell a overpriced pair of pants.

2, It is a fashion statement.

3. It looks cool for ground pounders that have never rode a horse a day in their life to wear them with spurs which are too shiney to ever seen real use.

For attire comfort Wranger jeans are preferred because of the way the inseam is sewed. Cover them up with chaps or chinks and you will look cowboy enough.

Finally saddle pants ain't going to protect the area on you that is gonna be sore.

"Hee,Haw" Haw, Haw"!!!Butt butter ????panty hose?????Where's The Phantom when you need him???He's from Texas and I was sure he would chime in.......Most cowboys wear chaps that I worked with for 40 yr.s.....saddle seat pants were worn more for looks than use...Depends on what part of the country you're from.......And there is nothin wrong about being "Homophobic"...In today's world we have to accept everyone's quirks and they always stick in your face that you can't judge them.....Do not judge those who like things the old way....Please do not tell me the "new way is better"......Tuco.

Ha, ha, no direct knowledge but I think these folks are pretty much correct based on my experience. What I did was buy a wade style saddle with roughout leather, you know, to stick me in the seat for mounted shooting. Well it worked pretty good, sort of, my Wah Makers, saddle seat or not, stuck right to that leather but my bare leg shimmied back and forth and all around and by god knotted up all the hair on my inner thighs, I could hardly walk, had to shave the knots off when I got home. I'm ok now, I wear chinks more and the roughout has smoothed up some so I don't have to shave my legs anymore... :o

You miss my point. I have rode the Bishop to Mammoth Lakes CA cattle drive three times. After the last one when I had saddle sores an OLD timer suggested to me the panty hose option ( under his breath of course). Notice I said pantyhose not PANTIES. I tried it. It worked. Going again in summer. I'll use my bike pants. 12 hours a day in the saddle a man gets sore. Jeez it was just a tip not meaning to incite a riot or make a political statement!

Like was said earlier those "saddle pants" aren't really for ridin. Now as for the panty hose....... I was on a pack trip some years ago in Montana. After the first day of being in the saddle I was so sore it was ridiculus. The next morning I got up real early cause I couldn't sleep. The camp cookie was the only one up and he was starting the fire. I went over to lend him a hand and happened to mention how sore I was. He proceded to tell me the secret of riding long hours in the saddle....panty hose. When you're in the middle of nowhere and you're not sure if you can ride another mile cause of saddle sores who cares.....it works!

Thank you. And No Duke Deadeye, it has NOTHING to do with "make up or high heels" ( not heals DUH!). It has to do with riding long hours not wearing womans clothes. Secrets of what real cowboys know!

Being able to move with the horse IS a component of comfort. However, IME, it's not the end-all, be-all of comfort. If the saddle doesn't fit the horse, or you don't fit the saddle, almost no type of clothing will overcome the friction that you'll build up.

From my experience... a solid seat is important, especially if you're going to be riding hard... fast and for distances. If the saddle is too big, you're going to slide all over the place, unless you have the techniques and strength to hold yourself in the "sweet-spot".

Comfort for long rides, whether for pleasure or competition will depend more on conditioning than on your clothing.

Charlie is correct... saddle pants with a leather or suede seat will help you hold your seat a bit better than jeans... and that MAY be important if your saddle is a bit on the large size. I don't like to move a lot in my seat... not that I don't... but I much prefer to have a solid seat. But, that solidarity ain't in the seat of my pants. It's between my knees. But, that's me. Your mileage might vary.

How your're going to ride is an important question. You just going out on a rent horse for an hour's trail ride? You going to begin a training schedule for mounted shooting? You going along for a roundup? Spectating or participating?

Really, truthfully, the pantyhose trick is absolutely viable. Until your conditioning is such that you can hold yourself in the saddle, having some slip between you and the inside of your jeans, will save you some blisters. It's probably more important than havin' "saddle pants".

But, since you've already learned from the best in the business... and watched a couple of videos, don't worry about it. Do it your way. Why'd you bother asking on this forum? Go over and ask on the Mounted Shooter's Forum.

Having owned and ridden horses of the flesh type and the iron horse type, I will man up and say that the use of the panty hose has been tried by this cowboy. They do work and keep the family parts safer also.

The cowboy pants that are of the two cloth materials are one layer and as every one has stated are for cosmetic looks only.

My only worry while using this trick was that I would be knocked from my horse and trying to explain my clothing choice when the medics arrived.

We used our quarter horses to hunt deer off of in the swamp bottoms of Louisiana.

On horse back you can ride upon them with no problem but watch out for all the low hanging limbs.

And ask about wearing silk. :)

I'm with you. I wore the panty hose on an elk hunt because I had not spent enough saddle time before going. I'd rather dress funny and walk right than be raw!

How come when anyone wants someone to agree with them they say"That's what REAL cowboys do"...I've worked on ranches for 40yr.s and here in New mexico & Colorado..You could not get up every morning and put on your panty hose....You'd be gettin a new job.....Or learn how to ride with out panty hose...panty hose works ..and Real cowboys will laugh at you.....next you'll be asking about "spanks"...under your gun belt.........Real cowboy!!!!HAR! HAR!...........

I wouldn't say that... however, when a couple of them recommend it to a greenhorn as a method to avoid blisters until you have the skills, strength and experience to ride properly... I won't laugh at anyone that does.

I might be wrong but if I remember right, I believe I read somewhere that it wasn't originally designed for horse riding - instead it was designed for teamsters who had their butts in a wagon seat for long periods of time.

If it was designed for more comfort when riding horses in the 1800s, then why didn't the Cavalry ever adopt such a design to their uniforms?

Howdy!

As mentioned above, the WAH ones are for looks, not use. When me and IB were riding regularly, IB bought a pair of River Junction wheat colored pants, and sent them to an old west clothier, who put a suede leather covering over the inside of the legs and buttocks. (He'd add his botas if the terrain was going to be 'sticky'.) The pants helped keep IB in the saddle better, avoided chafing, and had the advantage of being cooler than chaps or chinks in the S. Nevada heat. I just toughed out the heat and wore light weight, light colored shotgun chaps (as I had given away my light colored chinks), which prevented chafing and rubbing on the stirrup leathers and gave good lower leg protection against the 'stick you, pinch you' stuff out here in the Mohave.
