Rooster Ron Wayne Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 After reading a post here on the wire I called Henry Firearms . The man I spoke with was very polite and advised me that Yes we are making a new SASS Rifle. It will be out before the end of 2012 . They are making a 1860, American made Brass Framed 44/40. I did ask about other calibers . They said it is going to start out as a 45/70 and then a 44/40. Other calibers will be in the works. OK , SO Let the Pissing match began !!!! :FlagAm: :FlagAm: :FlagAm: Quote

Prof. Fuller Bullspit Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Could be interesting. I'd love to support another American gun company who makes products that work in our game. I'm a bit concerned about a gun that will be in .45-70 and .44-40. If it is the same frame/linkage it may work well for one, but probably not for the other! Quote

I am under the understanding from the conversation with him ,that the Rifle first be out in 45/70 Then a new Rifle in 44/40 by the end of the year . I asked and requested for other calibers and he said good things are in the works for Henry Arms . :FlagAm: :FlagAm: :FlagAm: Quote
Gold Canyon Kid #43974 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Sounds like more BS to me from Henry. Wonder when the ads will come out saying it is already SASS approved? Wonder when the head of the company will come on the Wire and lie to us again? Quote

Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 45/70?? in a Henry? are ya sure?? Yeah, I could believe they would start producing a .45 Colt in a true Henry design, but not .45-70. One of those sources of rumor is not speaking or hearing clearly, I'll wager. Good luck, GJ Quote
Gold Canyon Kid #43974 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 You would think a company like Henry would do a better market research job. Just how many 1860 Henrys has Uberti sold compared to 66/73s for example? I do not believe an 1860 Henry action will take a 45-70 load, something is fishy here. Quote

Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Maybe a matter of "pride" now, now that SASS members have complained for years about how they are not really making a Henry rifle (with the BB). So, use close to the same internals for all three, with a Henry clone first, then 73 and 66 look-almost-likes later. ???? Anyway, most of us might actually start paying attention when they have a working prototype at a Shot Show or SASS Convention. Good luck, GJ Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Interesting... If it really is a .45-70, it would seem to me that it would have to be scaled up bigger, akin to how a Winchester 76 is an upscaled 73. On the other hand, if there has been a mis-speak or a mis-hear and it's in .45 Colt, then it could very well be in a standard sized 1860 frame. IF the Henry company is indeed making a true 1860 Henry, I would seriously consider buying one. Since I already have an Uberti in .44-40, one of these in .45 would be a nice thing to have. And, if it IS an 1860 Henry, it is already a SASS approved design. This will be worth watching. Quote

Would appreciate better intel when starting rumors. Yep. Before they start going around saying it's SASS approved. They better make sure this time. They screwed it up with the BB. Would love to see them make a GOOD SASS rifle. But sounds like the are going to make something I have no use for. I would think they would try and make something that would sell more. Don't think people well be standing in line to buy the 45-70 or the 44-40 Very limited market on lever guns to start with. Let alone calibers that are just not that popular. Please Henrey Repeating Arms. Make a 66 or 73 that works. Think THEN you would have something that would sell more. Getting ready to buy another one of there .22's. Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Howdy Methinks something is rotten in Denmark. 45-70 is almost twice as long as 44-40. I would like to see a toggle link rifle with a carrier and frame that could handle both sizes. The cartridges in this photo are, left to right, 44-40, 45-70, and 45 Colt. Cartridges Quote
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I would fully expect that the person at HRAC that Sturm talked to was an office worker or some such, not a gun person, and they said 45-70 when they should have said 45 Colt. It would make perfect sense for them to make the 45LC first since that is the most popular caliber in Uberti 1860's and follow with 44-40. Now if we could just get them to also make it in 44 Spcl Quote

Now if we could just get them to also make it in 44 Spcl +1 on the 45 Colt vs 45/70 (makes no sense). If they are truly going to introduce one in late 2012, then they've been at it for more than a year, and likely more, without ANY fanfare. Suspect they'll hold they're press releases till they have working prototypes and submission to SASS. I think they have learned from mistakes (even the ones they maybe didn't do but are accused of), and will do this right. It sure would explain their continued high level of support for SASS. If they make one ('60) well in 44-40, I'll buy it, and if they follow with good 66 and 73, I'll probably need a new safe. They should look good with Red Wings alongside! :FlagAm: harvey Edited February 18, 2012 by Harvey Mushman Quote

Col. Nathan C. Riddles, SASS # 7462 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 (edited) Sturm got his original info from me, in a post I did over in the classifieds. He made a little mistake with the info he got from Henry. They are NOT making a 1860 Henry in 45-70. That rifle is intended primarily as a hunting rifle. They will bring it out first and then the 1860 Henry in 44-40 or 44WCF (same caliber but old name). I agree with GCK on research & devopment. Here's what I told them; "You know making a replica 1860 Henry is not a bad idea. But if you're making it with cowboy action shooters as your main market target I'll go you one better. Most shooters shoot Uberti Winchester 73s, 66s or Marlin, or Rossi 92s. Calibers by popularity are 38 spl, 45 Colt and 44-40. The Henry takes special care when loading because if you let a round slide down the mag tube at too steep an angle it could travel too fast and impact the next round too hard and cause a magazine detonation causing injury or possibly death. I know of no deaths but there have been injuries. Make it first in 38/357 and I think it will take off like a plane. What we do need is reproduction Winchester 97 pump shotguns. Winchester stopped production in 1956 and aren't very likely to resume the same. The supply of real 97s is just about exhausted. The Chinese will not export less than 1600 guns in a shipment for some reason and getting an importer to buy that many at one time isn't going to happen. A new shooting venue has spun off from CAS called Wild Bunch based on the movie of the same name starring William Holden, Ben Johnson and Ernest Borgnine. In WB you shoot a 1911 Govt Model 45 acp, a 97 and a 92 (preferably, but any SASS legal rifle is acceptable). Theren't too many CAS shooters shooting WB partly because of the shortage of 97 shotguns. SASS has just approved the 93/97 (a model 97 with an ejection port widened like a model 93) for WB only." Edited February 18, 2012 by Col. Nathan C. Riddles, SASS # 7462 Quote
