Howdy:

I have this old Belgian made shotgun - Bayard which were manufactured by Ancient Establisment Pieper in Herstal, Belgium. It is of interest because it has Belgian proof marks and quite a bit of German on it. I cannot translate the following phrase - pour poudres veves - the cognate pour = for, poudres = powder - but nothing in my head comes to mind for veves (except some voodoo stuff. Anyone out there who can help me?

That stamping is most likely "pour poudres vives". This is an old term for smokeless powder. (vives = lively)

As per this reference:

Pieper was a pretty good guild gun maker. Assuming good shape, might be something you could shoot. Follow standard approaches with old doubles, check chamber length, construction, etc, etc.

Good luck, GJ

Try going to Google, use language tools and type in the words you want to translate.

Howdy & Thanks:

I had translated veves as live (cognate from spanish) also, - but I wasn't sure - kind of an idiom thing I guess. Thanks for the confirmation. I appreciate you time and effort on this. :-)

The shotgun is quite beautiful with LOTS of gold inlay - not brass. It is very well made.

Thanks again.
