Subdeacon Joe
My, My,that was something. Did you ever notice that the US planes were larger than the others? The Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire, and P-51 Mustang were all pretty much the same size. But, yeah, the rest of the US fighters were massive brutes. Almost universally pilots from other countries who climbed into Thunderbolts and Corsairs felt lost in the huge cockpits and felt like they were in command of a flying tank. Abilene Slim SASS 81783
Takes a big airframe to contain a Pratt & Whitney R-2800, 6-8 .50 cal and all the other ordnance they carried! As for sheer size, if not weight, the Fairey Swordfish a.k.a "Stringbag" wasn't petite. Swordfish

Big Jake That happened earlier this year. The Skyraider landed safely, the Mustang did not, but the pilot bailed out successfully.
