Wildcat and I debated on whether to go to Convention this year or not. The vendors have been decreasing yearly, and that is what draws Wildcat. She has done most of the seminars as well. Being the last one as well, we decided not to go. Then I thought that maybe I'll go by myself, but I don't see any of the TG agenda items passing, so I couldn't get enthused.

As it turns out, it was a good thing. I got hit with a gout attack on Monday night. I treated a lot of it, but never had it before. It is not fun. I can still barely walk, despite two days of treatment (getting better). I could never have made my way around the Riv. So even though the gout sucks, at least I am not having to cancel plane flights, hotel room, and car rental reservations.

I actually have no idea about gout and uric acid, but there is an ad on tv for some medicine or another that connected the dots between uric acid and gout somewhere deep in my brain.

Amazing what my brain keeps around like that, then I try to remember someones name and draw a total blank.

Thanks, Hacker. Yep, colchicine is still used sometimes, but it cause the runs in a lot of people. Indocin works well in mild attacks, and throw in a steroid pack for moderate attacks. I've been doing the Indocin and steroids, which is working slowly but surely. I also started Allopurinol 100 mg a day.

My wife never had gout until about a year ago. Pretty much disable her for a couple of day every so often. Doc can't pinpoint the cause, but says it's different for different people. the result id the same, though. So far scallops and chocolate seem to be out, maybe red meat.

Miserable, crippling condition; runs in my family, along with kidney stones and bad arthritis...thanks, Dad.

My doc says the stories about a connection with certain foods are guesses, at best.

Alipurinol has kept me 95% protected.

One oddity, though. About 10 years ago, I was laid up with a bad attack. Sitting at a dining room table, foot braced out in front of me. My exuberant son, who could never sit still, suddenly pulled his chair forward, whacking my big toe head-on. No angle - straight hit. I felt a sudden "pop", as though the toe had been out of joint and was popping back in place...and waited for the pain. Nope. No pain. Gout gone. Instantaneously. Figured the impact must have busted up the crystals in the joint. Now...if I could just figure out a way to duplicate and package that maneuver....

Besides the discomfort, the bad thing about gout is that folks look at you with mocking pity - "Gee, you'll have to lay off the champagne and prime rib (giggle giggle)" "So, you've got the rich man's disease!"

No sympathy - just sarcasm. I pray that they may feel its pain, just once...that would stop the jokes.

I don't get here too often, but do really think that they would stop with the jokes...Its a saloon, where we can tell it as it is...It make us feel good, at your expense...But I you do feel better...I know I feel better just reading all this...

VA Doctor put me on allopurinol 150mg/day after lab test showed high level of uric acid. Next test showed good. They gave me 300mg tablets, so I have to cut them in half. I read on the web about red meat, but didn't know about not putting chocolate in my booze.

Red meat, shellfish, organ meats (liver, sweetbreads, kidney), spirits, beer, asparagus, and legumes are the most notorious.

I'd be disappointed if this gang of reprobates didn't slam me with jokes. This IS the Saloon, where anything goes.

For whatever reason, studies have shown beer is the worst drink during a gout attack, followed by distilled spirits. Wine is okay up to 6 oz. a day. I stopped all alcohol just in case...

Well... this goes to prove what I've said for some time... You are definitely full of p!ss... now I'm looking for the vinegar part...

As far as living without the above... you might as well kill me now... Either I would wither away without the same, or I would become such a grump that someone would do the deed for me...:lol::lol:

In all seriousness, I feel for you... I have a couple of friends that suffer these attacks occasionally and they are quite frank in that it is no fun... Call it what you want, it's pain and problems... Hope you get better soon...
