Now some people are really stupid!!!!

Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die.

This is so priceless, and so, so easy to see happening, customer service being what it is today..

A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00 when she died, but now somewhere around $60.00. A family member placed a call to Citibank.

Here is the exchange :

Family Member: 'I am calling to tell you she died back in January.'

Citibank: 'The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.'

Family Member: 'Maybe, you should turn it over to collections. '

Citibank: 'Since it is two months past due, it already has been.'

Family Member: So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?'

Citibank: 'Either report her account to frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!'

Family Member: 'Do you think God will be mad at her?'

Citibank: 'Excuse me?'

Family Member: 'Did you just get what I was telling you - the part about her being dead?'

Citibank: 'Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor'

Supervisor gets on the phone:

Family Member: 'I'm calling to tell you, she died back in January with a $0 balance.'

Citibank: 'The account was never closed and late fees and charges still apply.'

Family Member: 'You mean you want to collect from her estate?'

Citibank: (Stammer) 'Are you her lawyer?'

Family Member: 'No, I'm her great nephew.' (Lawyer info was given)

Citibank: 'Could you fax us a certificate of death?'

Family Member: 'Sure.' (Fax number was given )

After they get the fax :

Citibank: 'Our system just isn't setup for death.. I don't know what more I can do to help.'

Family Member: 'Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just keep billing her. She won't care.'

Citibank: 'Well, the late fees and charges will still apply

(What is wrong with these people?!?)

Family Member: 'Would you like her new

billing address?'

Citibank: 'That might help....'

Family Member: ' Odessa Memorial Cemetery , Highway 129, Plot Number 69.' Odessa , TX 79760

Citibank: 'Sir, that's a cemetery!'

Family Member: 'And what do you do with dead people on your planet???'

Priceless!!

Wish I could say it was a flick, but that is CitiBank for ya. A long time ago, I got a bill with a 0.00 balance. I was happy until the following month when I was charged a late fee. I called them to ask what was going on. They told me that I didn't pay them, which I agreed with. I asked what was I to do, send in a check for 0.00. They said yes. I asked for a supervisor, and after 20 minutes I finally got them to agree that the thought of sending a check for 0.00 was stupid. It took longer to get them to agree about their late charges. I knew I should have dropped them when I had the chance!!!!!

My experience with Citibank and others is that they stop all fees and interest effective on the date of passing, and that it takes way less dialogue except with Capitol One. And the balances were not zero with Citibank. Capitol One, however, needed a lot of dialogue and their balance was zero.

I did have an account some years ago that, when I got it to a $5 balance I went to a teller and said that I wanted to close the account. She said that I had to send them a letter. Before I got the letter out, I got charged a $10 service charge which made a -$5 balance so I got hit with a $15 negative balance charge. In fact, I got hit with a $15 negative balance charge every three days so that in 30 days it had a negative $155 balance. I ignoreed it. When it got to negative $300 the the bank closed the account. I never did send them the letter asking them to close the account but they sent me 21 negative balance letters.

We had checking and automatic withdrawal savings accounts with a local bank. They had problems that we decided we could not live with so we closed all accounts.

1st of the month we get an insufficient funds notice. How can this be? Well they charged the checking account for a withdrawal to savings.

It was explained that we no longer had a checking account nor a savings account with them. They apologised and said they would handle everything.

The next month we got an insufficient funds notice and we went thru the whole thing again.

Again they apologised and said they would handle everything.

Three times we went thru this.

A few days later we got a statement that showed $180 balance where they had returned the

$50 for each withdrawal to the checking account and refunded the late fees. I took this to the bank and told them they were nuts, that the money in the account was false. They said they would take care of it.

A few days later we got a notice that they had solved the book keeping problem by "moving the said monies to our savings account" giving us a balance of $330 in our savings account.

I went to the bank. Politely informed them that I no longer wished to do business with them and to close my savings account. The clerk went thru all of the clicketety-click stuff and brightly said every thing was taken care of. As I started to leave she said "Wait, Sir! Here is your $330 dollars from your savings account". I smiled, took the money and went home. I handed it to the wife and told her to put it up because they would figure it out and want their money back. 14 months later she told me that Christmas was coming and she would like to spend that money. She did.

If you have followed this, the money she spent for Christmas did not exist except in some book keepers nightmare.

In my very early Air Force days I'd gotten a double paycheck. They next pay day I received a U.S. Government check for $0.00 It cost more to print and send it than it was worth.

In January two letters from the IRS come to the house. They say my father owed them back taxes and penalties for his 2006 and 7 tax returns. Unclaimed interest.

My father paseed away 3 years ago.

My tax guy send them a letter saying he doesn't owe taxes and oh by the way he is deseased and the estate is closed.

2 Months go by. two more letters and more penalities and interest.

I called and gave them the story. Please send us a letter to that effect.

A month goes buy, two letters, more penalties and interest.

ANd now they want a power of attorney saying I can represent my dad. Send it off with death certificate. They didn't ask but what the hell maybe someone will get it.

Two letters show up. We need you durqable power of attorney, and oh by the way we are going to lean his property and lock down his bank accounts until he pays. ANd we will interview his neighbors and track down his assets.

I call the number given. Explain the whole thing to the lady. No father, no bank account, no property, no estate, and and . SHe says wait 30 days if they haven't figured it out you'll get another letter.

Here's the fun part. 30 days later I get all my paerwork back, a letter saying they are closing the claim, and have determined that they owe my Dad $32.00. He can claim it by filling out XXX form.

Only took 7 months for the Fed's to figure out he was gone.

Another goody.

My Mother ran our business for many years. She got a call from the State of Missouri Sales Tax division that they were going to audit her account.

They drove 3 agents 50 miles one way, did the audit and determined that there was a difference of $1.25 between what they said she owed and what she had paid.

They made 3 return trips to check on various items that they thought caused the difference.

They sent a letter telling her that that had made a determination and enclosed a refund check for $1.25.
