Nice cart, looks like you put some thought into it. In my experience, I think you will find it easier to maneuver with larger wheels.

Looks nice. However will the rifle fit in the box with the action open?

This is from the Shooters Handbook:

"Long guns shall have their actions open with chambers and magazines empty and muzzles pointed in a safe direction when transported at a match".

"Houston.........we have a problem!"

Guess I'll need to leave the doors open when transporting.........Ugh!

If you can build this... with this much attention to small detail work.. it's not a problem...

Figure out and mark where the lever (when opened) on your rifle comes to the door top when closed..

Mark the area in the door top and cut a slot big enough to let the lever stick through...

The straps you made for holding the center long gun could be duplicated and be mounted so that when the

rifle lever sticks through the slot.. the duplicated leather strap could go through the lever to insure the lever stays open...

or no leather strap.. if you can see the lever... ya know it's open...

Nice wood working and idea's...

Rance <_<

thinkin' bigger wheels also...

Where do you sit?

Sit? ...Why in a chair ...of course!

I've decided to modify the hinges to make the covers removable to comply with the safety standards. I will then build new wagon boxes where the covers can fold completely back against the sides of the boxes.

Live and learn!

Very nice job. If you have two boxes why not modify the cradle on other one and place the rifle in sideways with the lever opened? If it's removable, you can slide the cradle out and replace it when desired. I have seen any number of shooters over the years who have had similar box arrangements or have gun cases which they fit the long guns into when they are in the cart and the rifles, in particular, had the levers opened when taken out of the box or case. If the firearm can't been seen or readily accessed when in the cart, who can tell if the lever is opened or not?

THe guns are in a closed box so the lever hasn't to be oppened, exactly as if you were carying them in your plastic box or in a soft case.

You only have to open the action when taking the guns out of the box.

Seems I didn't read the CAS rules completely. Firearms need to be stored and transported with actions open. Can't do that with the covers closed. So I modified the hinges to make the covers removable.

I'm not sure how ROs will interpret this rule. Now there is zero need for interpretation.

Howdy

Nice work.

But your biggest mistake was stating the cart is FINISHED. Gun carts are never finished, as you are discovering. It took building the big box in front twice and the little box in the rear three times before I was satisfied with the capacity of my cart. Notice, I don't need to drag a chair along. But I ain't gonna say it is finished.

Gun Cart

P.S. I agree, the actions do not need to be open if the guns are cased.

Hi Roy,

Welcome!

Nice wood work on the cart. By now you've read the following rule, "Long guns shall have their actions open with chambers and magazines empty and muzzles pointed in a safe direction when transported at a match."

As Curly and Matthew said, it has also been my experience that when transported in a full size soft case or box, actions are not required to be open. That said, I think it is wise to comply with the "letter of the law." You never know when you will run into someone who is not quite so reasonable.

Regards,

UPDATE!

I took folks advise and decided to go with bigger wheels. I searching for a set of wheels, I found 16" spoked wheels for $20-$30 each. I didn't want chrome, but that was all I could find. I figured I'd paint them black. As I was searching, I received an email from Cabelas and it had a Deer Cart on sale for $49 with 16" Black wheels !

http://images38.fotki.com/v1280/photos/2/36012/10180567/s7_420219_999_01-vi.jpg

I ordered it and it showed up three days later. It included a nice set of black 16" wheels, a few nylon tie down straps, 6 clevis locking pins an axle and a few nuts and bolts.....and a whole bunch of aluminum that can be used on various other projects!

The smaller wheels had an axle running the entire width of the cart.

This wouldn't do as it witl raise the height of the cart too much.

I cut the axle that came with the deer cart for two "axle stubs". I welded these to a couple small plates of steel. And usiong 4 nuts and bolts, I bolted them to the sides of the gun cart.

The cart rolls much nicer now over rough ground. And I think it looks a whole lot better..........

I put ten coats of Tung Oil on it. If you stain something like this, every scratch and nick will show and it will look terrible in a few trips to the meets. With Tung Oil, if it gets a bit scratched, you won't really see them and a bit of sandpaper and a cloth rubbing in more tung oil will make it looking like new.

The Gun Boxes are stained because I want them to get a bit banged up and look "period correct"........

Next one I build will be out of Cherry or Walnut, with Tung Oil....................

Great looking cart. I built mine out of cherry with a few walnut accents cuz I have about 1000bf of cherry. It's been air dried for 6 years so it's nice and light as well.

That was a great deal on the deer cart as I think I paid about $55 shipped just for my wheels. I used Watco Danish Oil on mine and then shot it with some acrylic lacquer I had left over.

Here's my cart

Jake, thanks. Yes, I believe that my first gun card was a Festool Systainer that I carried around :)

Can't wait for spring :)

Willy,

Beautiful cart! Love the joinery. I have one of those jigs around here somewhere. But I sold all my woodworking equipment when I got real interested in gunsmithing about 20 years ago. My whole cart was built with an $88 Harbor Freight table saw with a real nice Freud blade, a wooden Danish hand plane and a plug cutter!

Next one O do I'll find my Box Joint / Dovetail jig and do it up right..............
