I already beat you to writing the sequel. It goes like this;

 

On the way back to America Quigley discovers that Crazy Cora really is crazy. So before their ship reaches San Francisco he jumps ship and heads east into the great American West. Crazy Cora, angry at being left, hires some of the roughest men she can find and puts a bounty on Quigleys head. Thus begins a long chase which sees Quigley trying to find work as the buffalo herds have been almost all killed off while staying one step ahead of the posse. The Indians even get in on chasing Quigley after meeting Crazy COra and believing she has magical powers.

 

The final scene has Quigley surrounded by bounty hunters and Indians, his horse dead, out of water and almost out of ammunition. The Indians keep creeping closer and closer until .....

I appreciate such widely read and knowledgeable cowboys. I am always befuddled by shooting cowboys who do not seem interested in the history.

 

I recently sold 105 L'Amour books. I kept his autobio but had read these 105 books about 4-5 times each over twenty years. He truly is a trubadour.

 

I have read the Brules series; seriously good story. How to get it to a couple of hours would be tough.

 

Instead of the second battle of Adobe Walls, I would suggest Billy's whole life.

 

Tom Horn's life would be good: scout with Al Sieber arresting Geronimo, lawman, civilian Medal of Honor recipient (Cuba), Wyoming cattle range enforcer, documenter of his imprisonment, trail and hanging.

 

Eugene Blair is one of my favorites.

A good John Singleton Moseby Civil War movie. Also a good trio western series such as the old "B" western series, the 3 Mesquiters. MT

The "establishment" of San Francisco and Calistoga by the Mormon Sam Brannan. He was a fascinating character:

 

- California's first millionaire.

- Preached the first protestant sermon in the state.

- Opened a bank.

- Issued his own currency.

- Printed San Francisco's (Yerba Buena's) first newspaper.

- Performed the first marriage ceremony in the city.

- Started the first store in the Sacramento valley.

- Established a spa.

- Furnished the materials to build Sutter's Mill.

- Organized the city's vigilance committees.

- Drank like a fish! And yes, he was a Mormon.....well....when he got to San Francisco anyway.

There are some remakes that I'd like to see done. "True Grit" shows that it can be done very well.

 

There were a lot of classic Western books made into movies in the 50s-70s that have iconic status but still show the limitations of the way they made movies then. Among other things, they were too sentimental and the clothes were too clean!

 

In my own 'umble opinion, the best Western writer remains Elmore Leonard, and of course there are a lot of good movies which have been made of his books. I'd love to see a proper remake of "Valdez is Coming", which in my view is one of the top 3 or 4 Westerns ever written. While a very good film job was done of Hombre, "Valdez is Coming" was poorly done, although it retained some good elements from the book.

 

But the one I'd really like to see remade would be a major heresy to many: The Searchers, the great Alan LeMay book. But, as True Grit shows, you can do a great "remake" without taking anything away from the first movie version.
