Lefty Stone Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Howdy All, As the Greenhorn in question from above, I am wondering what advice you may have for someone just starting out. I have a number of years experience in other forms of shooting (PPC,IDPA) but, the lure of Single Action pistols, and the Old West is too great to keep me away..... I am hoping to use the Winter Months here in MI to visit some local clubs, meet some folks, and get my gear together for the Spring. Thanks in Advance for your time taken to look at this, and pass along any Pearls..... Lefty Stone SASS# 93612 Quote
Utah Bob #35998 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Visiting local clubs is the best way to find out what equipment you need/want. SASS folks are always willing to help a new feller out. Welcome to the fun. For a quick look at starting up you can visit Capt Baylor's site. All sorts of great info there. Capt. Baylor's Ranger Camp Quote
Grizzly Dave Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Welcome! Sounds like you are taking a good path, go visit, try out different guns, see what you like and what fits you, then buy. Opinions are like noses, everyone has one and some like to put theirs in your business. So see what works for you. Have a look see at Cap'n Baylor's Ranger Camp Marauder's Cowboy Page is also a wealth of information. The SASS Handbooks can be found HERE. Hang on and enjoy the ride! Grizz Quote
Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 (edited) 1. Don't shoot anyone. Club members tend to become upset when you do that, and you probably won't be invited back to that club. 2. Have fun. Now that the important stuff is out of the way, you're already on the right path. Since you already have experience shooting in other venues, SASS should be a cake walk. In addition to the links posted above, visit Grizzly's youtube site. He has a ton or so of folks shooting at various stages and clubs. You can learn a lot from watching others. I reckon Grizz is just too modest to ring his own bell, so I'm ringin' for him. I've got a few videos on youtube, do a search for blackpowderpulp, but mine are more for fun than learning. Might I be so brazen to suggest a blackpowder category for maximum fun? It's all fun, regardless of what you shoot, but BP is just so much funner. Edited November 21, 2011 by Pulp, SASS#28319 Quote

It's all fun, regardless of what you shoot, but BP is just so much funner. Funny thing, the only firearm I have now that fits the SASS requirements is a replica 1851 Colt Navy in .36cal. I have consumed Capt. Baylors' site, more than once now, going to check out those others ASAP. I feel lucky in that within 60 miles of my house there are 4 or 5 active clubs to go stalk.... err visit. Quote
Flashpowder Hal Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Never even crossed my mind. My Channel on YouTube, hopefully that link will work. I've got about 5 years worth of videos too (from two local clubs) - http://www.youtube.com/user/Sig229DAK?feature=mhsn Quote

Okie Sawbones, SASS #77381 Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I read the Wire for six months before I ever took my first step. Yes, you will find a lot of BS, but you will also find a lot of pearls as well. By all means visit a local club and look over the gear before plunking down your dollars. You'll find some folks who are willing to let you try out their guns. Don't be shy. Kick Badger and Grizz outta the way, and belly up to the bar. Quote
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Welcome Pardner. Bottles, the good stuff if you please. We got a new man here. Now that we got the official stuff outta the way, let me give you the straight low down. 1. Stay away from that black sooty stuff. It will make your face dirty and your voice will sound like you been breathing charcoal all day. Well, I guess you would have. 2.Like Pulp said, Don't perforate nobody, and make sure you have some fun. Pulp don't make much sense most of the time, but he was kerrect on that. 3. Don't ever, ever, never, ever listen to Okie. He gets his brain pickled with cheap wine and don't ever know what he will come up with. He even believes that Oklahoma will win the Big 12 title. His wife, Wildcat, makes him sleep in the kennel at night cause the dogs don't want to associate with him. That is why he has pork chops on his ears. Quote

Blue Steel Duke Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) Welcome Lefty! In my own experience, I made the mistake of buying cheap replicas to use initially and within 6 months they were all malfunctioning. Quality will cost more initially, but not in the long run, and your local club will be an invaluable resource. Have fun! BSD Edited November 22, 2011 by Blue Steel Duke Quote
Oklahomabound Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) Welcome to the fire!!!! There is wise advise listed above and I 2nd all that has been said except from that thur fellar called BMC (Badger Mountain Charlie), who's wurds must be taken wit a grain or three of salt or just ignored completely.... ...visit local clubs. ...most folks will be happy to answer your questions. ...most pards will let you handle (do it safely) their guns. ...most pards will let you shoot their guns (do this safely as well). ...read the SASS Shooter Handbook and the RO1 Handbook - learn the game and have fun with it. ...choose your category/style and which can drive your choice of guns. ...most pards will tell you where to get guns locally and who the best local gun smith is. ...figure out how often your going to shoot and whether your going to reload or not (we-Ms. Mary Matilda and I) shoot 3 matches a month all year long and normally try to shoot 3 or more major matches-so I reload. ...and did I say have fun, this is a game. ...and yes, Ms. Mary Matilda and I shoot the Holy Black Powder! DocWard Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) Well, I just checked, and I am still damp behind the ears, so I might be able to offer some insights. You already have a good plan in place. Here, Cap'n Baylor's, Marauder's, and the youtube channels are all good. Visit different clubs, and if someone offers to explain things during a shoot, latch on and listen! If a club offers an introductory shoot for FNGs, shoot it and ask all the questions you can. Here are a couple of more links to youtube channels, these from Ohio. Since you are from Mi... Mi. Mich...the State up north, (JUST Kidding) you may get down this way to shoot some. http://www.youtube.com/user/thecampokid http://www.youtube.com/user/dirtychris77 I almost forgot, borrow a shotgun shell carrier of some sort if you don't have one by your first shoot. It sucks carrying them in a shirt pocket. Also, try to arrange room for your stuff on a guncart ahead of time at a shoot. Dirty Chris was kind enough to help me out, along with giving me pointers along the way. Edited November 22, 2011 by DocWard Quote
