Shotgun Primers vs Large Rifle Primers

Howdy,

Does anyone know if a shotgun primer is just as hard as a large rifle primer?

Thanks,

J. H.

Really kind of hard say with certainty, but after years of reloading and gunsmithing may kinds and types of firearms, I would say that there is little if any difference in any of them. Some Brands seem to be a bit softer than others. I do know that Rifle primers are supposed to be a bit thicker to handle the higher pressures that are generated in the big calibers, (and some small calibers too). This probably makes them need a bit harder pin strike to ignight them, but as far as being harder, I doubt it.

I've had a chance to shoot Cowboy Fast Draw with their shotshell primers, from my and my wife's match revolvers. Those revolvers are light enough that the hammer only fires Federals 100% reliably. It fired all the 50 or so shots with SG primers through my and Amber Ale's revolvers. So, I would say there isn't much difference in how much hammer strike it takes to fire the two types of primers.

I would expect rifle primers to be a bit harder to ignite than pistol and S/G primers.

Good luck, GJ
