reloading 40 S&W

I'm not sure you could get enough powder in the case to cycle the gun, and ya might not get a jacketed bullet to clear the bore. Trail Boss is intended for low pressure loads and is very bulky. .40 S&W MINIMUM loads run at pressures in excess of .45 ACP max loads......

WARNING! IMR cautions NEVER to compress Trail Boss

My bet is very little if any data for TB for 40 S&W. Here are a couple of resources http://www.reloadammo.com/40loads.htm and http://www.handloads.com/loaddata/default.asp?Caliber=40%20SqqqW&Weight=All&type=Handgun&Order=Powder&Source= Hodgdon doesn't list a load that I can see for TB in any of their data http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp some powder are just not well suited for some cartridges, this may be one of those cases. Adios Sgt. Jake

Re-reading your post, based on my use of TB in short cases, I'd say with LEAD bullets in a REVOLVER, I'd use a full case but NO compression, just enough to touch the base of the bullet and no more. You simply can't get enough TB powder in the case without compression to hurt anything with .40 S&W. DO NOT COMPRESS TB, or ya will send pressures UP there, and unpredictably so. I would NOT try it with jacketed bullets, as squibs are likely.

Want to try loading 40 S&W with TRAIL BOSS has it been don?

Going to be used in ruger with a cinder for 40S&W

can you send me what was used to my E mail [gunrunnerj@gmail.com] thank you Joe <_<

I loaded up some 40 S&W just like what A.J. says, with 180 gr lead bullets. Easy shooting, barely worked the slide on a semi. Empty cases were falling at my feet. Slide wouldn't lock open on empty.

Howdy

I just checked the Hodgdon web site for data on 40S&W. You can too.

Hodgdon

There are no 40 S&W loads listed using Trail Boss. Clearly, Hodgdon does not think it is an appropriate powder for 40S&W.

Driftwood, when they run tests and list data, powder makers take into account the NORMAL uses of the round in question. I seriously doubt they gave .40 S&W with lead bullets for low pressures in revolvers a second (or first) thought, as it is by and large a semi-auto round run at much higher pressures. For those pistol or rifle rounds not listed they said 70-100% charge density (for those reading this, 100% means JUST touching the bullet base) with no compression would work with lead bullets in most anything. In a very short case ya need to stick toward the higher end of that formula, but he's not about to hurt his ruger as long as he's sure the bullets exit the barrel.
