I'm lookin' at an original 1885 Winchester single shot rifle for Plainsman matches. The caliber is listed as .32 Short. Is that .32 Colt Short, .32 S&W Short, or something else?? Being it's an original chambering for this rifle, would it be legal for SASS Plainsman shoots??

Well this info is from my 1897 Sears and Roebuck catalogue.

Rifle rimfire in, extra short, short or long cartridges 26 inch oct barrel $10.13

Rifle center fire 28 inch oct barrel $10.13 ( notice no cal. listed and 2" longer barrel on C F )

Ammo section 32 rim fire, 32 ex short, 32 short, 32 long, and 32 ex long.

Center fire, 32 S&W, 32 short, 32 long Colt, 32 ex long Ballard, 32 Colt's new lightning magazine rifle, 32 Winchester

Barrel length might tell you rim or center fire. No such thing as a Colt short. If it was 32 S&W would be marked that way but the Rifles were not listed in that cal. So my guess is it is 32 Short and C. F. because there isn't a 32 long listed in C F. I would think if it was R F it would be marked 32 Long and shoot all the R F 32s
