They Are Hanging Badger Tonight

They are Hanging Badger Tonight!

The day had started out just fine,

the morning soft and warm.

But soon the distant dust clouds

announced folks from ranch and farm.

Folks came from far and near,

Toostone was filling fast.

They hadn't seen such excitment

in anybody's remembered past.

The story that went around

and caused quite a stir,

was of how the fight got started,

and how Badger had called Ned, a cur.

Seems Ned was a cowboy,

he had quite a sordid past.

Came out from the Nations,

Some said that he was fast.

Now Badger was a mean ole cuss.

Nobody cared for him at all.

He would take candy from the children,

and steal your horse from it's stall.

Story was that poor ole Ned,

stumbling through the swinging doors,

Bumped into ole Badger

just as he began to pour.

There ole Badger stood,

with beer on his shirt.

The look in his eye,

said somebody is going to get hurt.

Ned started to laugh,

he thought it was a sight.

But it was really the beginning

of this historical fight.

Badger called Ned a cur,

and began to swear and cuss.

Ned, in his drunken state

didn't see why all the fuss.

But Badger drew his pistol

and shot poor ole cowboy Ned

The Saloon got deathly quiet

on the floor lay Ned, dead.

Well, the sheriff came so fast,

with his deputies to arrest.

Badger the killer,

with beer still on his chest.

The trial was quickly over,

The Judge said you must hang.

Badger swore at the judge and

said he didn't give a dang.

So they took him to the jail house

and locked him up right tight.

They were going to hang him

later that very next night.

There was only one big flaw

when they brought his last meal

There was a big plate of beans,

not a real big deal,

Badger ate the beans,

they filled him right up tight.

Then he took out a cigar and

asked for a light.

The match was barely lit

according to the tale,

when there came a chilling boom,

destroying the jail.

They never hung ole Badger,

They are looking for him still.

Some say he went to Glory,

Others say he never will.
