What straight-walled modern pistol caliber cartridge case has a sized diameter in the range of . 437-.440?

The .41 magnum is pretty close.

 

EDIT Did you mean pistol as in "handgun", or pistol as in "not revolver"? Because the .41AE is also very close.

Howdy

 

Yup, the two 44 S&W American cartridges in my collection have case diameters right around .438. They're over 100 years old, so they are not perfectly round anymore. The 44 Henry in my collection measures about .441 in diameter. Of course it is a rimfire and is copper cased. The other giveaway about the 44 S&W American is it uses a heeled bullet, so the driving band of the bullet is the same diameter as the cased.

 

The cartridge in the center of this photo is a 44 S&W American, the copper cased one to its right is a 44 Henry Rimfire.

 

Left to right in the photo are 44-40, 44 Special, 44 Russian, 44 S&W American, 44 Henry, 45 Schofield and 45 Colt.
