Dog Ears Wilson, SASS #77948
Hmmm... I haven't heard it said quite like that before. I've often heard it called "navel gazing." It means contemplation, usually with the connotation that the gazer is thinking or talking too much about a subject instead of actually coming up with a solution and fixing the problem. Example: The darn city council spends each meeting navel gazing and the trash problem keeps getting worse.

Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967
Well Deja... the answer might depend on who's doin' the staring at your navel...
Bama Red
Contemplating one's navel leads to self-enlightenment. Contemplating another's navel can lead to getting your a$$ beat by her boyfriend!!
Utah Bob #35998
Yes, it's "contemplate" not "stare at". Only a Cretin would stare at their navel.
