Chuckaroo #13080 Regulator
Country Wildman, Way to go. I donate blood every 54? days. It only takes about an hour and the only thing that hurts is the dang test with the neddle prick. I'm up to about 9 gallons and look forward to seeing all my local friends at the blood drives. In fact, we are holding one at my club next year in July to fill a gap in the local Lions Clubs drive schedule. Roo

Only takes a few minutes and could be the difference in life for another. GOD bless Wildman I usually donate where I work when they have a blood drive, but missed it a couple of years ago. I was at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, visiting a relative, and walked over to the blood center and did a donation. The next week I got a phone call, it was a recording of a 9 year old boy who had a kidney transplant and got my blood, thanking me for my donation. Also his mother left a message. Sure warmed up my heart.
Dirtwater Doc 17941
As a specialist in blood banking (SBB) I salute and all who donate blood. It is truly the gift of life. I've been donating since 1975 and now over 30 gallons (108 units plus 42 double plasma units) and 4 bone marrow donations. Consider donating platelets or plasma. Cpt Dan Blodgett, SASS #75655
Donated for a long time long ago. At the time felt like donating platelets or whole blood was about the only truly worth while thing I was doing - job kinda sucked but paid the mortgage. Moved to El Paso, did not donate for a year or so, decided to go back, found out was no longer eligible - mad cow potential for having served in Germany in the 80s where the Commissary sold British beef (don't know about the messhall) Kinda sad. Wonder what the brits do for blood? creutzfeldt-jakob's might explain some of my behavior though
Mustang Gregg
I donate a pint every 8 weeks, if possible. I have given over 13 gallons on record, and more that wasn't counted. When I get back from OEF, I will be banned from donating for at least a year (and maybe forever???) We'll see. Mustang Gregg Type A Pos

Charlie Harley, #14153
Moved to El Paso, did not donate for a year or so, decided to go back, found out was no longer eligible - mad cow potential for having served in Germany in the 80s where the Commissary sold British beef (don't know about the messhall) That's what got me banned too. I was at 8+ gallons and a passionate advocate to all my friends. Then one day the nice lady asked "Have you ever served....?" which led to more questions which led to a permanent ban on me until they find a test for mad cow disease. It really hurts every time I hear the local radio talk about "urgent needs" due to tornados or holiday traffic accidents. I wish I could lie about my background and give again, but my SSN is already in the system with a "reject" label. Oh well.
Possum Skinner, SASS#60697
Arggggghh! I'm a mad cow reject. Now I'm depressed. Ok. Not really, but I was disappointed when they said I couldn't give blood any more.
Blasted Cap
I'm in the same boat as Possum Skinner. Lordy I've been home from Europe for 20 years. Duffield, SASS #23454
I never kept a record of how much I have donated, but I have been donating regularly since 1974. The local blood bank has a harder time geting platelet donors than whole blood donors, so that is what I am donating now. Duffield

Uno Mas SASS #80082
Consider donating directly to your local Hospital. The American Red Cross charges a pretty penny for each pint. They do great work, but... (Un)Fortunetly, my blood type, AB+ isn't in demand, as my type is the universal recipient, but can donate only to another AB+ typer, who are relatively rare (less than 3.5%.) Still, I got my two gallon pin. 30 GALLONS!!! Proud, man, proud!
Finagler 6853 Life
I'm going to donate Wednesday at a drive here at work. I donate when ever a drive is in town and I'm eligible. You should have seen the look on the workers face when I told her I had been to South Africa. Parts of SA are on the restriced list. The blood drained from her face, she jumped up like she had been stuck with a pin and ran off to get a supervisor. Came back and after looking through their books they decided I could give. I think I've done 8 gallons but I stand in awe of someone that has given 30. Good job.

Noooooooo!!!!!!!! True, you're a universal recipient for whole blood BUT, you're a universal DONOR for Platelets. Platelets are desperately needed by cancer and burn patients. You walk into your local donation station and tell them you're AB+ and there to donate Platelets, they'll darn near give themselves heart attacks trying to get you into the chair as fast as they can. One note though: Platelete donations are a much more involved process so, don't be in a rush. I usually have time to wathch an entire DVD during my donations. Uno Mas SASS #80082
Philly and Dirty, thanks! I was donating whole blood through ARC at work when I was told not to bother. I guess that was correct, as far as it went. Guess I've gotta get my game on: haven't donated in (wholly shi'ite) probably 15 years. Sounds like platelets can take 2 hours or so... how involved is plasma donation? Thanks for the advice! [Edit:] Okay, I'm there! Kaiser Permanante Orchard Blood Donor Center 9449 E. Imperial Hwy. Chili Pepper Kid, SASS #60463
I too used to be banned because of service time in Europe and Africa (mad cow and malaria). However my sister-in-law works for the Blood Bank here in town and a few years ago she told me they had eased some of the restrictions. I checked and sure enough I could start to give again. As a matter of fact next Tuesday is our church's drive and I'm giving. So some of you pards that have been banned ya might wanna check and see if ya kin start giving again. I've given a number of times when called on for AB+, and given platelets (what a pain) until about the time I retired and they found out I'd had a relapse of malaria after nearly 24 years. L. G., SASS #48097
My fellow co-workers and I race to see who can fill the pint bag the quickest. Now, after all these years I find out that if it's 3 minutes or less, they consider it an arterial stick and they have to fill out a lot of paperwork. My best time so far has been 3 minutes, 15 seconds, so it's getting close. Been giving for over 30 years, so I guess I've saved a life or two.
