FS or Trade - Original Winchester 1873 Short Rifle

Oklahoma Dee

Recommended Posts

I have for sale, an original Winchester 1873, in 38-40 caliber. 20" round barrel. Born in 1888, a very good year!

I bought this fine rifle earlier this year and now it needs a new home.

The owner prior to me, said that there was an action job performed on it by a Dallas gunsmith of well known abilities.

It does not have a short stroke kit. The bore is shiney, no pits, good rifling, possible 7-ish on a scale of 1 to 10.

**additional information - the barrel was relined in 2003. So that makes the barrel abit more than a 7. Also, I called about the serial number from the Buffalo Bill Historical center and found out the following:

Date in: 7-2-1888

Type: Rifle

Caliber: 38

Barrel: Octagon

Trigger: Plain

Date shipped: 7-7-1888

Order: 9529

R&R – 2-1-1896

She is a round barrel now....when??? I do not know and neither does the owner before me.

Just a real Winchester 73, setup to shoot Cowboy Action. Now is your chance to shoot the real deal!

Hey there Wolfgang,

I am a bit remiss on that. When I bought the rifle, I was going to work towards using her in Cowboy Action shooting, and quite honestly, the person I bought it from, said the bore was good and I put my trust there. I put 10 rounds down range, and hit every target I shot at. 10 Dinks! She shoots fine. I have watched your replys and questions on various forums, and highly respect your insightful comments and general confabulations...that being said, :FlagAm: I sure admire your knowledge base and wit.

But, I would not rank this rifle as a collector piece. Hence, I have never looked down the bore.

She is a shooter only. An American Shooter at that! :)

But should someone ask to peer down her shaft, I will do that. Course, my idea of a bad, good, or grand bore, may not be that same as others!

Cheerio!

Why? That is one of the first things I look at. What if you went out to shoot it and it were plugged with a 100 year old mud dauber's nest? Bad ju-ju.

Like I sed up above.... a statement of bore condtion, . . .ie. from one to ten. Is a standard way of stating congition and would sure help a potential purchaser know what they might be gettin'....

Oklahoma Dee,

If you would consider $800.00, let me know. I have a feeling I will need to replace the barrel. Thanks, Dave

Highlonesome Lee, If you let me know more about your 1911, and see some pictures, I can make a decision. I am leaning toward the 308 rifles, but maybe you have something I could dwell on. Thank you for your time.
