Aunt Jen
Ok. Lets PRETEND that I'd like to see if I could buy an 1887 lever shotgun for myself. Ok? Best stock for $440 from http://www.gunsamerica.com/926979732/Guns/Shotguns/Norinco-Shotguns/Norinco_IAC_1887_12ga_Lever_Action_New_12_ga_8.htm or something slicked for $1,500 like Chiappa http://www.mkschiappa.com/MKS_Chiappa_rifles/Chiappa_1887_LA.html or something slicked for $1,000 from Coyote Cap? http://www.coyotecap.com/mod__87_wcse2.htm Bearing in mind: I am not ever gonna compete with the greats. I'm just interested in reliability, mostly.
Wolfgang, SASS #53480
I looked, . . and looked . . . and researched . . . and dreamed . . . and, and, and . . . . . . . I wuz trying to decide on a lever action rifle . . . ..... and I realize that a '73 wuz the way to go . . . and the '73 lever action rifle was desinged by Henry ( toggle action ), adapted by King ( loading gate ) and more by other Winchester designers and was made by WINCHESTER. So .. . I bought a '73 rifle made by WINCHSTER. And I just bought another one . . and i'm HAPPY and I love them . . . and they are not a re-desinged copy of a '73 winchester made by eye-talians. . . . SO . . I'd suggest . . . getting an 1887 lever action shootgun that wuz manufacturd by WINCHESTER

Aunt Jen
I know that the 1887 isn't allowed for WB, but it's allowed for everything else, and I am thinking it has a lot of character. I'm just wondering if it's worth it to get one of those slicked ones, or if a regular one would do? I don't think an authentic antique would be so good for me. I'd worry that someone may want to help themselves to it or something.

It would be worth it if you where gonna use it often...not worth it as only....and I mean ONLY as a back up.

And will they handle modern .12 gauge ammo (when full strength?)
Wolfgang, SASS #53480
How much do originals cost? And will they handle modern .12 gauge ammo (when full strength?) They appear on "gunbroker" frequently and sometimes on the classifieds here on SASS. I've spent more $s to have original '73 Winchesters that to buy eye-talian coppies. . . . . . and I've spent a bit to have old high quality SxS shootguns, .... . . . but I'm happy that I have. If I miss every target . . . I'll still win on "style points"

Do you know if the IACs are okay out of the box, function, reliable-ish, or is it necessary to spend the extra for the Coyote Cap slicked ones? Aunt Jen the one I bought was good out of the box, I used it 4 or 5 matches then my son got ahold of it and he has not let me use it sense. I did cut 3" off the stock, both of us like it better with the stock shorter

I did cut 3" off the stock, both of us like it better with the stock shorter Well, if that's all I had to do, I could cut some inches off the stock, no problem. What about the loading and cycling? Can you drop 2 in out of the box? Does it cycle, reliably-ish, even if a bit clunky, right out of the box?
The Shoer 27979
yes and no, ours would but there is a learning curve to it. You don't pull your shells the same way as you do a double or '97. My son loves it, he would be the first to tell you 99% of the time when there is a train wreck it is his fault. When you rack the leaver you DO have to rack it hard. The thing about '87 are ether you like them or you don't.

I am pretty sure all the new ones are set up that way Caps and Lassiter are more fine tuned then the ones off the shelf. You might consider getting one that is race ready, I tinker with all my guns.I forgot till just now when I got it I did tear it apart cleaned and smoothed all the ruff edges but I do that with every gun that comes into my possession. Hope all this helps
