The Hickok Shot Award.

At Eldorado 2011, The SASS Nevada State Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting.

We are adding an extra long range event.

The Hickok shot.

According to "history", on July 21st 1865; James Butler Hickok and Davis Tutt faced each other across the town square of Springfield, MO.

They stood 75 yards apart.

Davis Tutt took the first shot at Hickok and missed.

Hickok drew his pistol and with a single shot hit Tutt through the heart.

So, the event...

Equipment:

SASS legal main match pistol with barrel LESS than 9 inches in length.

SASS legal main match ammunition.

Holster upon shooter capable of safely holding the pistol.

Method:

Pistol will be loaded with ONE round.

The pistol will begin holstered - the shooters hand touching it.

At the beep; The shooter will draw and fire a SINGLE shot at a 16 inch target set 75 yards distant.

Award:

The shooter that hits the target with their single shot in the fastest time will win The Hickok Shot Award.

One shot - One award. No seconds, no thirds. No do-overs.

Makes no difference if you're a boy or a girl.

Just like the historic gunfight. Fastest hit wins, nothing else matters.

We were discussing side matches for the state championship and at what distance to place the long range rifle (pistol caliber) target.

We had kind of settled on 75 yards and someone piped up and said, "We oughta shoot the pistol at that target too".

After we beat on that person with a large stick; we then relented and said ok.

And so the Hickok shot award was born.

We figured it was simple, the steel will already be there.

All it required was creating one more award, and why not? You can't go wrong offering your shooters more chances to win something.

What a novel idea. Good on ya Creeker.

Does the shooter only get ONE try?

Or can he/she go back to the reloading table and try again (and again)?

Oh yea, Please let us know how this turns out.

Vegas will probably put up odds on this one..... :D:D:D

I like it. Simple, fun and a little old west history!

If this catches on Uberti can start selling a whole bunch if 8 3/4" barrel pistols. Ha Ha

 We do it around here all the time, call it Wild Bill One Shot. Starts with one round in pistol, muzzle touching table. At the buzzer, raise and fire. Fastest hit wins.

We allow any style(show offs shoot duelest, which I like) Usually make it somewhat easier as we shoot a 20-30in target at about 50 yards. Fun because it makes folks shoot faster and miss.... just sayin...

If its a Hickok.....Will you have to shoot Duelist? dry.gif

Supposedly...

Hickok didn't shoot it duelist either. The stories and depictions talk about supporting the pistol on his forearm.

Since I wasn't there, and don't know for sure.

We're gonna allow any SASS legal shooting method.
