Is it safe to lengthen the the 2.50" chamber to 2.75" on an M-1887?

I found a decent looking one that looks like it might just have to be purchased.

I'm told that the S/N equates the mfr date to 1902(?).

I have seen posts from several people who say they have lengthened the chambers with no problems.

Me, I just use 2-1/2" all brass shells in mine, so there is no problem. But, reloading those things is a lot of work, so if you wanna lengthen, I'd say go for it.

The 1902 date gives me pause though. According to this website: http://www.proofhouse.com/win/index.html The last 1887 was made in 1898.

Also according to this page, the 1901 was made from 1901 to 1920, with serial number picking up where the 87 left off.

Are you sure it's an 87 and not a 01? Easy way to know, if it's a 12 gauge, it's an 87. The 01 was 10 gauge only.

The easiest way to tell the difference in original Winchester lever shotguns is to look at the lever. '87s have a one peice lever, '01s are two piece.

Some '87s are 10ga., all '01s are 10ga.

'01s have a 2 7/8" chamber. I wouldn't recomend opening them up to 3".

Much obliged, Pards!

It is a 12 ga for sure. He knows the diff, I reckon.

And I will have him get me the S/N so I can look it up.

I've had a couple of Pards offering me their CC '87's, but I ain't interested.

Thanks for the info.
