Captain Long Story, US Cavalry
Rough Rider Bucky O'Neill rears his bronzed horse in Prescott, Ariz.'s town square. O'Neill was the quintessential Western hero, by all accounts. He died in the battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba in the presence of Teddy Roosevelt. Had he lived, everyone assumed, he would have become governor. http://www.npr.org/2011/07/28/138774830/bucky-oneill-a-rough-rider-cut-down-in-his-prime
Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life
My wife is a local historian and did a lot of research on the Rough Riders as several from our local area were part of the volunteers. I read a lot as she has lots of research sources. Yes he was quite a man. I recently bought a dvd of the mini series about the Rough Riders, it was great too. All of the volunteer companies had some real cowboys recruited from all over the southwest.
