"Yeeucch", says my wife, "I don't like toads".

"It's not really a toad. It's a lizard", I replies.

"Whatever. Get rid of it."

And Hornitos the Horny toad is released back into his habitat.

I wonder if they taste like chicken?

Hey bob,

A couple of years ago I was working on top of Lone Mesa for the state park and found one of them critters. Real red like yours too. The thing that surprised me was I was at 9500 feet. Didn't know they could be found that high.

I read that wile they normally stay below 8,000 ft there have been some found up at 11,000.

Not in the winter I'll bet.

That little bugger is almost as prickly as you are, Bob.

Actually he seemed to have a better attitude overall. ;)

I used to find them when I was a kid, but haven't seen one for years. I guess they aren't too numerous up here in redwood country.

They make great pets, but, if I remember correctly, they're pretty tough to housebreak.

I just saw a program on Animal Planet and this was one of the 10 weirdest animals. Wow they really do spit blood outta their eyes! It can go 3-5 ft. They showed a coyote backing right down after he got sprayed. I guess the blood don't smell so good. Cool animal

That would have been my first thought.

I haven't seen those horny toads since I was a kid in western Oklahoma. I read Horned Toad populations have declined dramatically in both Texas and Oklahoma. Horned Toads have practically disappeared in the eastern and central portions of their range in Texas due to human disturbances, such as converting habitat to agriculture or to urban centers. Eradication of ants is another cause, since this is their primary food.

I had many a Horny Toad as pets when I was a Youngin'! I would tie a string around the horns on their head and "Walk" them  We were over run with Horny Toads, Jack Rabbits and other assorted critters wayyyy out in West Texas. I just HATED Rattlers, still can't abide any snake!! Haven't seen a horny toad in a looooong time.

This area was crawlin' with 'em when I was a button, rarely see them anymore. I was seeing some at the "farm" several years ago, but it's been awhile.

I somewhere have a pic of one I took not long after I got my first 35mm back in '78. Almost stepped on him, thought it was a bug. I caught him and took his pic with his foot on a penny. The penny was bigger than the little horny toad!
