Grizzly Dave Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 Big family gathering tomorrow up at our cabin, that means I get to take toys to play with, but having trouble deciding which to take.... Rickon I'll take the cowboy toys for sure... and several .22s as they are cheap to shoot... the 9mm and .40 are fun, but no cheap to shoot and don't reload for them...yet... too lazy to run targets out a long ways, so no need for the high power long guns... And anything I take I gotta cart and lug and cart and lug ammo to feed them... decisions decisions.... I did get to fondle one of the new Ruger 1911s today, I liked it A LOT. Sadly it didn't come home with me, oh the things I do to preserve domestic tranquility... Quote

Yellowhouse Sam # 25171 Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 Traditions in our family renunion: Fried chicken, ham, fresh corn and green beans, tater salad, maybe squash, bisquits and gravy, and pies of every description. Then the men retired outside, guns were pulled out, and the shooting commenced. Course the new ones got all the attention and us kids got to fire em all. Mid afternoon meant ice cold watermelon and homemade peach ice cream. One of my uncles pulled out a Colt Woodsman and a ML rifle he had scratch built...I was hooked for life! That was long, long ago in simpler times it seems. Hope you have a good time Grizz and create a lot of memories. Quote

So - where ever I go , on these kind of outings - I take one gun that I trust for EWO (Emergency War Orders), in other words - the one I want when the manure hits the ventilator. That gun won't get shot - it's there as emergency rescue equipment.. Now - what gun or guns do I want to play with - easy - when all else is frustrating: a good .22 rifle & pistol pair will make my life a delight. Bring a couple of bricks of .22 ammo - and enjoy the simple fun of a good gun and a simple time. Keep it simple and fun . . . Shadow Catcher Quote

Thinking about throwing the SKS and 200 rounds in the back when we're traveling a bit. You know, for Justin Case. I'll see how the War Department feels about that. I find that shooting outings seem to have three foci: The latest toy on the market (You gots the new Taurus Jury Nullifier!?! Kewl! Give it over here, now!) I like to keep either the Kahr K9 or Browning HP as the EWO gun, and then I can bring one or two others along for play. Too many guns means you spend more time playing at Dim Sum rather then enjoying an abundance of simple good things! You're right about the usual scenario, but after everyone gets to sniff the others a bit, we do settle down to playing with what we brung! .22's rule - they can do almost anything you ask of them - if you can do your part. They're the best training caliber in the world, at least until you need to take your already developed kills and transfer them to some other gun, such as a Dangerous Game Rifle. If I had to get down to bare basics for bug out, give me a .45 Colt or ACP pistol, and a .22 rifle - I can get by . . . . . SC Edited July 4, 2011 by ShadowCatcher Quote
