Duffield, SASS #23454
The combat troops have come up with a new name for REMF's. They are now called FOBBIT's, derived by combining Forward Operating Base and Hobit. This does not refer to those who work hard to support the troops at the pointy end of the stick, it is a reference to the men behind the armor plated desks. We have all met a few. Same game, new name.

Utah Bob #35998
They also serve who only fly a desk . It's when they puff themselves up and pretend to be someting they're not that they deserve any insulting nickname the grunts come up with.

Bill Mauldin called 'em garritroopers: too far forward to wear ties and too far back to get shot at.
Dakota Rebel, SASS# 58412
There were some folks that would fly in from Japan, Guam, etc just to get boots on the ground and get the tax exemption and whatever else they could. It was a regular racket. They would get one day TDY orders cut and get on a logistics flight manifest. They called it a boondoogle.

DocWard
FOBBIT has actually been around for a few years now. REMF is still in use as well. Strangely, I haven't heard SNAFU so much, but FUBAR is alive and well.

Okie Sawbones, SASS #77381
I'm proud of all folks who serve. Without supplies, the army does not move forward. Without medical care, the army is soon decimated. Casualties related to disease and non-battle injuries have historically been more damaging to U.S. forces than battle injuries. Never saw a troop calling a health care professional a REMF when they came to the MASH seeking help...
Duffield, SASS #23454
Those expressions are dedicated to those who "...Never leave that nice soft garrison, and always look real pretty...." And brag about their heroics. They are not applicable to those who bust their humps to support the troops. I should have made that clear in my first post, but thought it was universally understood. Nope, the little cliques have always existed and probably always will. If you aren't airborne, then you are a 'leg'. Lots of cute terms to show derision of others, like deck ape, etc. People are people. Some need to feel superior to others by deriding them. I know well of what you are saying, the little martinets that are waaaay back behind the lines, playing by the book games, while single-handedly saving America from the treachery of the world. Even those folks filled a spot -- at least they served instead of sucking off of America.

S. Quentin Quale, Esq. SASS 9953
My son described them as FOBBERS or FOBBETTES (depending upon gender; now that we have a "middle sex" I'm not sure what term would be appropriate ). He generally described them as wearing starched, pressed BDUs; highly polished M1940 three strap field boots (he was in the 278th ACR); a Beretta pistol (which were in such short supply that troops running convoy escort could not draw them from the armory); who never, EVER ran a convoy escort; and were quick to impress upon others that they were VIPs. These folks are, of course, a different breed from medical types; supply types sweating their butts off moving goods; or admin types who understood that they were there to support combat ops (as opposed to combat ops being there to justify the existence admin types). I suspect that this sort of "division of status" goes back to the first time Og decided to "call out the militia" to have go at Mog's village. That doesn't make it less stupid, however.
