You've got a standing 'Rain Check' Allie.

Jackalope is still smokin up the range and shootin mighty fast.

Anita is always whoopin up on folks. They are both great to shoot with and talk to.

I've discovered a sure fire way to keep Anita from whoopin me............don't shoot in the same match as she does.:lol::lol:

I know they miss you also and are sincere in their offer.

Take care.

As you know, I'm not Ray.

I just wanted to say, category winner awards aren't just "feel good" awards. That was writte by Dern Tootin, or at least taken by me, as a joke. Different skill sets, propellants...deserve recognition too.

BTW, look here for my thought about the OP.

Jabez Dear,

This "second class shooter" crap is your imagination at work. I've never heard or read the like of what you say by any skilled shooter. Most of the top shooters I've met are not like that. They shoot their game and are happy for you for being able to shoot the game as it pleases you.

You and the other "out of the box," "no short stroke" folks are the ones who are always talking (euphemism for whining) about what you shoot and insinuating others are not deserving for taking the "easy way out."

I still like you. I just am getting tired of this bu.. sh.. argument. Shoot what you like and let others do the same within the rules.

Regards,

Allie "who maybe should step away from the keyboard today" Mo

Allie,

I'll buy your supper ifn you don't edit your post #136.

:D

Thanks Widder!

I sure wish I could take you up on that as I have no intention of editing that post. -_-

I talked to JJ last night. He always tells me I'd be welcome to come shoot back there. Someday, I really hope to do so. :)

Allie Mo

Allie, please consider this a standing invitation. Come and shoot at the Smokeout in the Hills in October and we'll buy you breakfast, lunch and dinner (supper to us Southern folk). J.J. and Miss Anita make this shoot and I'm tryin' ta' get Widder there as well. Many of those top shooters in various categories come and shoot, (smokeless as well as Black Powder) and the party and food are without peer. You would be most welcome.

I add my support to your post #136!! +1 :excl:

I'll take a slightly different approach as to why I think the Top Overall award needs to stay. I set goals for myself. I start out small and then work my way up. I know other people do the same thing. I approach cowboy shooting the same way. My current goal is to be the Nevada State Champion Duelist. If I ever acheive that I'll set a more lofty goal; either National Champion Duelist or maybe Nevada State Overall Champion. Not sure which but the point is, it allows for a progression of more and more lofty goals. If there were no more goals to acheive the game MIGHT get boring. There's a distinct possibility we could lose our best shooters to sheer boredom. Obviously this doesn't hold true for everybody but, why take that goal away from the people who are striving for it?

I am so proud of myself!

I chose to use the delete key.

Five paragraphs that did not need to be written disappeared.

I'm proud of you too...just look; you try to be a leader and for 3+ subsequent pages nobody follows you!

I'm calling this a TROLL topic. IMO, the thought process that says we should eliminate honoring those that shoot "best" (contrary to what some might think, this is not just a speed game... one must hit targets occasionally) is, unfortunately, endemic in our society these days... socialism at it most devious and innocuous. The entire concept is right up there with "managed end of life planning." It is simply abhorrent and anti-American. Where's our celebration of the individual?

For once, I know where I DON'T want to shoot. Never thought I'd find that. In fact, after rereading this thread again, I can now name at least two persons whose applications would get returned to any shoot where I was MD; as I'd not want their fragile egos bruised when we announced the who the best shooters were, both category and overall. I'm surprised this thread is still here.

Every time I step up to the firing line, my goal is the best time... 1st place... no misses, no penalties. Unrealistic, hell yeah; but, as almost any TO that's had the misfortune to time me will tell ya, right about that first hiccup, they'll hear me mutter... "oh well, back to havin' fun!" The only person's whose fate you're in control of in a match is your own. How anyone else does is totally outside your control, same as how they play the game... we make these choices to enter this category or that, shoot this style or that, use this equipment or that, shoot these loads or those; and must suffer the consequences. I doubt there is a Frontiersman or Frontier Cartridge (or any other category) shooter that has NOT dreamed of besting all comers on that day or match. As long as they can dream it, it's possible... how probable it is, is up to them.

So yes, regardless of what loads, equipment, shooting style or manner of dress they choose, if one is deemed "Top Overall" for the match... that person is the "best" shooter. Now, that person might be deemed "best overall", but they still ain't "best" in any category they didn't compete in... that honor is reserved for those that did.

How a particular club or match chooses to honor folks is up to them. If, IYO, they put inordinate emphasis on the Overall, to the detriment of the categories (or vice versa), that's their choice; you still have the right to vote with your pocketbook.

Well if you shot competitive categories, guns and loads, you would likely move up in the standings. You were kicking the right person tho for your choices!

That's the sort of comment I would expect from a junior high kid, but I wouldn't think an adult would let it bother them. I've shot in a bunch of places (a whole bunch) and everywhere I've been, the crowd has been supportive of everyone whether they be a category winner (or tenth place in the category) or the top overall.

The fact is we like each other. It is difficult for me to imagine a comment such as this being said in a serious fashion by an adult. Now on the other hand, folks (including me) will give someone the dickens playing with them. If folks play with you, laugh with them. If they're not playing, they're peeing in their own Cheerios.

My reply was a joke. Ive not shot in a few years. The only time I ever won overall was at lone Star when all the better shooters were at EOT. I've been beaten by Spur Roberts many times, even once on Cowboys. I am always quite impressed with the better shooters I've shot with from Tequilla, Shallako,Long hunter, Evil Roy and lots of others. I didn't intend to be taken seriously. Sorry

You'd be making a big mistake. I know Phantom is NOT one of the folks you're talking about here but, I'll use him as an example. After interacting with Phantom a few times here on the Wire I was convinced he was one of the most pig-headed, good for nothing snakes that has ever picked up a shootin' iron. I had it set in my mind that if I never met him face to face my life would be better. After sharing a few choice thoughts on the matter with the likes of Madd Mike and others, I was set straight. Phantom, by his own admission right here in this thread, isn't all that diplomatic. But from what I've been told by folks that know, he's one of the best folks you'd ever want to be on a posse with. He's a hoot to be around, works as hard or harder than anybody else on the posse, is always willing to lend a hand in solveing gun malfunctions and is more than willing to offer advice or observations on how to improve your shooting.

And as far as places to shoot; I can't imagine judging an entire club just by the postings of one memeber here. I'll use another example from personal experience, Ace of Hearts. A lot of folks seem to be down on him just for starting this thread. I shoot with Ace. I'm a member of the Eldorado Cowboys where he's the Range Master. Both Ace of Hearts as a person and the Eldorado Cowboys as a club are second to none. If you decided you'd never shoot with the Eldorado Cowboys just because of something Ace said in this wire you'd be missing out on some of the best, most organized matches in the country. You'd also be missing out on the company of one of the most fun shooters in all of SASS. Ace's first priority is always safety but, he never ever forgets to have fun. That fun spirit carries over to anyone and everyone who's lucky enough to be on his posse.

Point is, don't judge folks just by the SASS Wire, it's NOT the real picture of who they are.....in most cases. ;)

Probably very true ... there's a certain pard (well...used to be pard even on FB , but he got all guffy with me and 'unfriended me' ) that if he and I met, would more than likely get along great.

Sad thing with the internet: it has a way of projecting something that wasn't meant to be. For example, some may think ya come across rude, and not having that face-to-face doesn't help in the true expression in the point ya wanted to get across.

Philly,

Phantom was decidedly NOT one the parties I was referring to. I've had the pleasure to shoot on the same posse with him. He was obviously trying for Top Overall, whilest I was doin' my darndest to impersonate a newbie shooter... One of most enjoyable times I've had... and look forward to repeating it. Even if he don't wanna be tugged down to my level! I even shot against some other newbie shooter in the Mano-y-mano and stepped WAY outta my character and shot way faster than my usual leisurely pace... and even though I tried to smoke that Tex Fiddler out (with my BP loads), he aced me and Phantom had to face him in the final! IIRC! And what the hey, makes for a good story anyway!

I would call Phantom alot of things, but 'Big 'ol grouchy teddy bear' is NOT one of them.

Had the pleasure of shooting with him at CaC, I enjoyed it, I'd posse with him anytime. Like many of us, he loves the game and is very passionate about it.

Thanks guys...but dang, it's taken years to build this poor reputation that I have on the Wire...

Fact is...at least to me, that the most important things one could do is go to a local club and shoot...support them...get new folks into the game.

Play within the rules and let others do the same without puttin them down for their choices.

Love the game and the people...that actually play the game.

Cheers!

Top overall as a "feel good" award? Sure, because the shooters who compete for it chose the categories of everyone else, surreptitiously creating an advantage for themselves, and then ran and hid in fast categories? Yeah, that makes sense.
