We're only gonna be there for a couple of days and I didn't want my car parked where the general public has access (guns).

General public will be able to walk through the shooter's parking lot. But, waddies (SASS volunteers) are posted at the shooter's parking lot almost all the time, and are pretty good at spotting ne'er-do-wells in the lot. However, a gun in a vehicle is not guaranteed to be safe any place in New Mexico, nor in your own home state, I would venture a bet.
