Buffalo Red Rock
Wanting to start our clubs long range 200 yd matches. I have an original 1886 Wincheter rifle, 26" bbl. and looking for some loading data that is accurate and safe for an early gun. I have a wealth of 405 grain lead bullets and would like to use them. If anyone has had some good success, I would sure appreciate your inputs. Buffalo Red Rock in Tennessee.

The Pathfinder, SASS #985
405 gr lead bullet over 61 gr ffg black powder. Has worked in every 45-70 I've ever had, from my trapdoor to my Sharps to my 3 digit 1886 Winchester. Also works well in Peabodys and rollers. Captain Woodrow Cahill, SASS # 54363
My favorite 45-70 load is 62 grains of BP or 777, fired from a '95 Marlin. Should work well in your '86 as well. For smokeless, Accurate 5744 powder works the best of any nitro powder I've tried. Their manual is here. For other powders, the Lyman Manual here is your best resource.
