Mostly in the US it's an excuse to party. It's pretty much ignored in Mexico. (like Armed Forces Day here). ;)

I've often heard this. Then my bride and I happened to be in Nogales, Mex a few years back on May 5. Her folks at that time lived in Green Valley, south of Tuscon.

Anyway, the schools were closed, and there was a big parade and Cinco de Mayo festival going on. One of the things I'll never forget was a group of horseman, in full conchos and silver, with the most fantastic bunch of synchronized horse work I've ever seen. Those horses were dancing backwards, sideways, and forwards to the music; amazing.

Of course, Nogales is a border town, but this was a big holiday do.

I say send Cinco de Miyo back along with the illegals. :FlagAm:

With respect pard, that's rubbish. Nothing wrong with a celebration, or with legals who celebrate it. Besides, it commemorates kicking the French out of the hemisphere, which was a good thing.

I don't have a drop of Irish in me, but I celebrate St. Patrick's day. I go to Croatian festivals with my wife, who is Croatian on both sides.

This is the United States of America. I am the son and grandson of immigrants, myself (Canadians, but still counts!).

No. It commenmorates the Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862 where the Mexicans defeated a superior French Army. The French went on to capture Mexico City and were not expelled from Mexico until 1867.

Around here, in the LaLA Basin, it's also known as the Tequila 500. I'll see some amazing carnage on the streets and freeways tomorrow.

Tonight, we'll be at home long before it gets dark. The wifey has already bought the fixin's for a fine home cooked German meal, our tradition for years.

Yer right. But the Frenchies got it in the nose, anyhow!
