Cautionary tale. Almost made a big mistake

Going to make coffee this morning instead of tea so I reach into the frezer to grab the decaf. You know how it is first thing in the morning, stretch, yawn, rub your eyes etc.

Well instead of getting the pinon coffee Mom sends in the care pkg I grabbed the NM red chilli powder she inlcudes in those packages. I store both in ziplock bags in the freezer to try and keep em fresh.

Standing at the coffee maker I stick the big spoon in the bag and decide to turn on the light over the sink, good move, at which time I see exactly what I'm doing. Whoa there midnight, somethings wrong here. Back to the freezer and get the correct bag, coffee is on the brew.

Wonder how a hot beverage made with 5 tablespoons of good red chilli power would have tasted? Other then HOT I mean, probably a great wakeup drink.

Dont get me wrong I have been known to sprinkle a bit of this fine product from the land of enchantment on a cup of hot chocolate but this would have been way different.

Be careful out there all you sleepy heads.

Once I put Preparation H on my toothbrush while half asleep. It was a close one.

I did that with Ben Gay once. Lordy, that burned.

Iron Pony, the freezer may not be the best place to store your coffee. The freezing breaks down the oils, and that costs flavor. Also, every time you take that bag out you get a touch of condensation in the bag, which costs flavor. And a bit of it thaws slightly, then refreezes, which costs flavor. Maybe store a bulk buy in the freezer. But then decant maybe a weeks worth into an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place - not the fridge.

Note to self: Do not shoot anywhere near Iron Pony until AFTER he has had his first cup coffee.

Note to self, dont shoot anywhere near Chantry when he has that dang 10 gauge loaded with 90grains of BP.

Joe, I drink so little coffee at home the 2 lbs Mom sends every year usually lasts all year. Sad to say I grew fond of tasters choice instant in the service so thats what is in the pantry for the occasional cup.

Hmm maybe this why is my last batch of Chilli tasted bland.

Well, I guess I need to confess. Captain Jack helps me make coffee at night for the next morning. I like to have it hot when I arise. Well, Jack wasn't watching and I filled the filter with coffee but forgot to add water.

DOH!. Badger can do some strange things when left to his own devices. Anyway, I came out and started to pour a cuppa joe. NO JOE! Looked in the filter and there was dry coffee. Looked in the water reservoir, NO WATER! HUH! So I add water and had my coffee at a later time.

Tasters Choice can turn out a perfectly good cup of everyday coffee. I've made full pots with it and served it to coffee snobs and they pronounced it as really good.

I've found that the Wal-Mart house brand Arabica to be quite good. Although I think that has gone by the wayside now. The Columbia isn't bad, but it is a robusta, or a mostly robusta blend, so not as rich and clean a taste.

 I have never done that.

My favorite way of not making coffee is to get the water and coffee into the proper places (you DON'T want to put your coffee grounds into the water reservoir, trust me. And, no, don't ask), turn on the machine, then, as I push it back on the counter to hit the switch a second time and turn it off.

But look at how much you can save on coffee doing that, Joe.

Forget gasoline. We have that if we could just figure out how to get to it.

Wonder what our balance of trade is with the coffee producing countries?

Kona can't produce enough to keep all 50 States going, I am certain.

$5.00 a cuppa Joe is next?

Course I'm not exactly a morning person myself without several cups of coffee

90grs? That would be somebody else's load. Mine are 120grs of BP and pulling both triggers at once is fun :wacko::wacko:

And then there's the time I filled the reservoir, put the coffee in the filter, and turned on the coffeemaker with the pot sitting on the counter alongside of it. Makes a heck of a mess when it starts bubbling over the side of the machine...

Oh...yet again, something I never do. ;)

Or you put the pot part way on and it sits a little bit cocked on that ring so the button valve in the basket doesn't open. Basket overflows and grounds and water go all over the place. Or so I hear.

Hmmmm...wonder what would happen if you used the chili powder as filler for a light BP load????

Tell ya one thing...it'll burn going in and out fer sure !!!

It could be worse. Someone did me a favor once and made me coffee. But she didn't drink coffee and didn't know anything about it so she and her friend filled the water reservoir with water and then filled the grounds basket with coffee and turned the machine on. Yuck.

Joe thats an interesting idea, kind of like a homemade OC (pepper) spray cartridge and great for crowd control. What with the smell of sulfur, flames and the added burning sensation whoever was downrange would be sure they were in hell.
