May be wrong forum, but I'll post it here to advoid all the smart-a#%ed remarks I'll git on da "Wire".

Do ya reload ? I never git all my brass back, dats why da question.

I reload what I get back, no clue how many times it's been reloaded as some is old, some is newer it all gets loaded when empty.

Every range has a brass black hole, where it disappears forever. I only load Starline, but when I clean and sort brass, I always find a R-P, Winchester, or Federal in the mix. I never get all of my brass back after a match, but I never worry about it. Occasionally I'll buy another 500 to make up for the brass lost over the last year or two.

I prefer starline but will load about anything. I am going to go thru and separate all of the canulured or whatever it is brass and set that aside for a lost brass match as I really don't want it back.

I don't sweat my brass. I've had matches where I had a net loss of 3 or 4 pieces, then gained 3, 4 or 5 pieces the next one. It depends on when the grass was cut last (if there's grass on that particular range) and how good a job the folks are doing shagging the brass at that particular moment. It don't matter much to me, I don't sort by brand name (except for nickel brass, I don't use nickel brass- just ain't worth the effort). I shoot it 'til I lose it or it splits.

I've also gotten the occasional surprise like .45 Schofield (or .45 Colt if I'm shooting BP), .44 Special, .44Mag or .44-40 mixed in. That kinda depends on who I'm shooting behind and what they are using. Folks freak out when I can tell .45 Colt from any of the above mention cartridges just by feel. I keep telling them if you handle enough of them, you know what feels right and what don't.

Ok folks. Thanks fer da info.

Just toyin' wif dis idea....Would you take a small file and ever so slighty mark da brass dat way ?

Just a thought.......................and sometimes dats dangerous !!

I never get all of my brass back, but like Okie said, some is other brands. I load starline but I have about

Fifty Winchester and perhaps as many remmie in my "collection". I inspect the brass before I load it, and if it passes inspection, it gets loaded. NO POWDER THO. SOMETIMES NO PRIMER.

I do mark the rifle rounds (.44 Special) with a marker across the primer so I don't mix them with the .44-40s in the heat of battle. Same with my .45 LC.

The ,44-40s are pretty easy to spot with the bottle neck.

Well Now

I gave up on marking brass , it does not seem to matter to some folks , whose brass they get . If I come across a marked one I will take it over to the owner or leave on the unloading table . Just reload what I get back and buy more as needed .

Yeah, but kin ya hit anything with it, Bill?

That is prezactly why I never load powder. Hit one target and right away them varmints want you to hit em all. Do I look like Annie Oakley?

Yeah, Okie, you a mad surgeon or somethin?

I figure I lose abot 5% per match but don't sweat it. If it was marked, and another pard ended up with it and noticed it while reloading, then he might feel guilty for something that wasn't his fault. Then again that kind of bad vibe might make him miss a few during the next match due to the stress/guilt. You may have found a good psychological strategy there Apache! :D

I mark my BP loads so I don't mix them up with smokeless. I get most of them back as many people don't want them. Losing a few at a monthly match is just part of the game. Whenever I run into a deal on brass I try to buy it. You can't have too much. Besides, brass is the least expensive part of reloading, so I don't worry about it.

I don't mark brass, lose about 20%, come home with maybe 10% somebody elses. My observation and I got concurrence from some other shooters is that the brass pickers work harder for the ladies. The Germinator always got more brass back than I did. and we were shooting the same stuff. If you want more brass back, wear a skirt.

I figure that I always get my pistol brass back and lose 3 or 4 rifle brass per match. Over the course of the year that works out to maybe 75 to 100 lost pieces, not counting lost brass matches like EOT or WR. It also doesn't figure in the occasional times I get back more than I brought.

Based on what I paid for new Starline 45 Colt a month or so ago it works out to about $15 or $20 per year.

Not worth the time to mark it up for me.

Regards

PS I normally shoot 38's so the cost is actually less, but once in a while I shoot my 45's

I occasionally mark brass. Black magic marker stripe running from one side of the head to the other, through the primer. I do that for one of two reasons, depending. One of my rifles does not like to extract RP brass, so when planning on using that rifle I mark RP brass to make sure it only gets put in a pistol. Occasionally, at a lost brass match, I will mark the brass that I don't like (Hornady brass, in my experience, splits too easily), to make sure it gets loaded in the rifle, and left on the ground. Sometimes I will mark the primers, to differentiate between loads. Black primer and red primer. Then when I reload, the mark goes away. Fresh brass.

I mark only rifle brass with a red X on the back. I reload Starline and any other brand I can get my hands on. My Starline brass is for pistols only and all the odd balls go through the rifle and onto the ground. Most shooters in my club know of my mark and the usual people picking brass know of it also. I hardly loose any brass thanks to the red X. It works for me....

I hand engrave my name, SSN, and phone number on each case. I can tell they are mine when I catch people squinting really hard at brass.

Now thats some funny stuff! HAHAHAAHA

Before you go using a file on your new brass consider this;

before Starline came out with brass head stamped as BLANK with the larger primer ignition hole, shooters were drilling large holes in there regular brass and then marking the brass they drilled out with a filed notch across the base of the case or a notch on the rim.

As a commercial reloader I look for these various file marks and the Starline head stamped BLANK. When I find the file marked cases I toss them in a bucket marked "not to be loaded". I toss the Starline BLANKS in a can to clean and resell at the range. It's been a few years since Starline came out with their purpose brass for making blanks, I still find the older file marked cases on a regular basis. These blanks are used by mounted and reenactor shooters. If you shoot with others that also shoot mounted or do reenactment you may come across these marked blank cases.

If you want to mark your brass I suggest a permanent marker pen. Any color but black. Black has been used to mark Black Powder rounds as long as I can remember.

Seems like a lot of bother....for each piece of rifle brass I attached a heavy log chain... :)
