He has a pair of each: 7 1/2" Great Western 2 with 1860 grips tg/bs installed (does that sound like a familar gun?? Top had the idea for it years ago. (oops, when I took the first pix Top hadn't got the 1860 grips yet it took about a year and a half to get them from Pietta.So I put in a shot of the after remodel. Course then I've got to decide do I use one of my '73s or the Henry or the '92... descisions, descisions. Oh yeah, almost fotgot to mention my favoritist of them all, that being my latest a Colt Centennial, but I haven:t got a mate for that one yet. Course I could always build up one... Hmmm. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Well, I have probably a rather unusual pair of .44-40's, and since they are the only 2 I have, yet, in this caliber, they are my favorites. #1: Colt 1878 with 7-1/2" bbl. #2: S&W New Model 3 with 4" bbl. Can't normally use them at a regular SASS match, but occasionally I am allowed to get away with them. Paired with the Henry, they are a lot of fun to shoot. Quote

There is just something about having a true to the period handgun, made by the same exact company that originally introduced that handgun. Some things just never go out of style or purpose. Virgil Ray Hality, SASS# 37355 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 So, I have a brace of Uberti 1875 Outlaws, 1890 Police, Schofields, Cattlemen and Real Colts. I shoot only black powder. This puts the Cattlemen and Colt revolvers in as favorites. I shoot BP at least one match a month. I use on of my Cattlemen revolvers for indoor smokeless practice (about 1000 rounds a year) Because of th design, and initial quality, the Colt revolvers are best. The grooves are a smidge deeper then the Cattlemen which has the advantage of longer lasting accuracy with BP. The Cattlemen revolvers are the ones started CAS with, and over the years I had them internally modified to stand up to CAS use. I use these the absolute most. Basically, I had wire springs installed along with polished innards. The big change in durability came when I payed a really good gunsmith to sheer off the Uberti hammer cams and install Colt hammer cams from Brownells and also harden the bolt tines. Its been at least 3 years since I have had any issues at all. So, net-net I made the inndards a lot like the Colts. I almost had the firing pin hole redone with Colt breach collets (or whatever you call them inserts). While I don't think these are heavily used revolvers, both are makes have servered me very well. Any (diameter) concerns running bullets through revolvers/rife (if you shoot a 44-40 rifle too) ? -Nate Hi Nate, I have found that the Uberti revolvers I have as all within +/-0.0005 in terms of bore dimensions. Just lucky I guess. The Colt revolvers had slightly deeper grooves, much like the Uberti Open Tops I have. Given this, I settled on soft 0.428 bullets for all my guns and I have not had any leading or accuracy issues. I did find that with smokeless, the 0.427 bullets lead to minor leading, BP was not a problem. The 0.429 bullets worked great for smokeless and BP except the BP lubed bullets caused a typical reloading issues in that BP lube on the bullets can cause the 44-40 cartridge to have a slight buldge at the crimp. This has to be corrected with the resizing die and for me it was about 20% of the cartridges. It only mattered in loading the revolvers, it did not matter in rifle chambering. One is about 20 years old and pretty beat up. The other one is 10 years old with ivory grips. Unlike a lot of Remingtons I;ve shot, these love black powder. Besides those, the other .44-40s I have consist of, a Remington NMA cartridge conversion, a 7.5" stainless steel Great Western II and a 5", nickel-plated, S&W Frontier Double Action. Quote
