My Son's First Match

Recommended Posts

Took my 9 year old son to his first match yesterday. He had a great time. We didnt have his shotgun ready by yesterday's match so he went without a shotgun. They let him shoot his rifle at the shotgun targets with the exception of any that threw a clay bird, for obvious reasons. Those clay bird targets were counted as misses. Other than that, he had NO counted misses with pistols or rifle. I knew the boy could shoot but even I was surprised at how well he took to it.

He was using his new Ruger SASS Vaqueros shooting .38spl along with an older Rossi .357 rifle shooting .38spl. The rifle is too long for him and the action is way too rough for him but he made due and hit everything he aimed at. I will be shortening the stock and slicking up the action for him ASAP. That will really help him out. (By the end he was getting tired and the rifle was no help)

Several guys and gals told us how impressed they were with his shooting and gave him pointers to help him along.

We would both like to give a special thanks to the Bayou Bounty Hunters and everyone that helped us out at the match.

Here are a few pics from the day.

Glad you and your son had a great time. I understand you guys were improvising without the shotgun. For future matches, be really familiar with the buckaroo rules on page 13 of the SASS Shooters Handbook, especially that buckaroos must be provided an alternate target for all aerial shotgun targets, and knockdowns don't have to fall over as long as they are clearly hit. Because there aren't that many buckaroos, not all counters and ROs are familiar with these rules.

thanks for the pointers. I do plan to get familiar with that part of the book. It was still fun. I mainly just wanted him to get a shoot under his belt and let me see how he was going to handle himself and the firearms in a public setting. He did great and now I am looking forward to what lies ahead for us.

What a great time you 2 must have had shooting together. !! my adult son was shooting with me last year until things got in the way of it,and I enjoyed every minute of him being at the shoots with me.

Sounds like he did GOOD,by gar.

someteims all a rifle needs is a litle lube and a LOT of cranking the lever while watching a tv show..cowboy show that is. <grin> work them rough edges off and they do smoothe up.

The stock lenght is very critical as you know, I an't been 9 years old for a LONG TIME,but I do remember how HUGE adult rifles were to me back then.

Keep him shooting, you'll both be grinning very time. !

Yes sir indeed. We have cranked on the lever and its a little smoother than when I first got it but it could use a slicking up. Since he will be using this gun I might as well make it fit him right and run smoother. By the 5th stage I could tell his energy was down a little and cranking that lever and trying to hold the gun up like that was starting to wear on him.

While the Browning has a nice short stroke but the Henry youth model is pretty smooth right out of the box and is pretty light and inexpensive. It does however have a longer stroke. I wish I still had the one Rattlesnake started with because I would've given it to you. Another good rifle that is light and shouldn't cost too much would be a Marlin .357 carbine. Shooting 38's it will hold 10 and the recoil is very minimal and the weight is very manageable for a young shooter.

Thanks. I thought about letting him start out with Henry .22 and some .22 pistols but figured (after talking to him) that we would just start him out on the .38s. I think once I shorten the stock a little and smooth up the action he will be right at home on the rifle. He didnt miss anything he aimed it at.....just started to wear on him, fighting a gun that was too long for him and too tough to cycle smoothly.

It was his first shoot with one of my extra .357 Rossi rifles.....now I know what I need to do to make it his own and make it where he can actually be comforatble on it.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

Everyone there was pretty helpful. The lady was really helping him to remember to do the crossdraw dance. We practiced it at home but under all the presure of the match he would sometimes not quite turn enough and they were a big help in helping me remind him.
