Trigger Mike
A local pard sold me a Colt SAA in a wooden box and wood grips and said it is the railroad model. What can anyone tell me about it? How can I tell when it was made, Is ther any other info about it?
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
You've got to provide a little more information. Are you talking about a commemorative? If so, there should be writing on the gun and/or box with a little more detail. For example, here is a Golden Spike Commemorative. http://cprr.org/Museum/Ephemera/Colt_1969.html If you are talking about a regular SAA with wood grips in a wood box, you have a wood gripped SAA in a wood box. Colt never made a regular production SAA called the railroad model. If it's a commemorative there are several sites that list dates when they were made. If it's a regular production Colt you can check the serial number or post a partial number and we'll tell you.

Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
Sounds like just a standard 3rd gen with wood grips. The serial numbers run generally as follows: Third Generation Colts started in 1976 with serial number 80,000SA. This series continued through 1978 with S/N 99,999SA. The SA was changed to a prefix, starting with SA01001 in 1978. This series continued until Colt ran out of numbers again with SA99,999 in 1993. In 1993 they split the S and the A, starting with S02001A. This numbering system continues up to today.

I paid 1200.

"Collectables" with cylinder wear of any kind become fancy shooters. That said, I'm not familiar with a Colt SAA Railroad Commemorative...so... $1200 would probably be too high.
