Smithy Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 So I finally got moved in and settled in my new house in Atwater California (60 miles north of Fresno on 99). The housing tract is a block from the very road and about 2 1/2 miles from the range I was planing on shooting at. They are supposedly full at 450 members, but can make exceptions of which I'm hoping I qualify for. They host SASS shoots every OTHER month to only once per quarter and no Wild Bunch. I had just recently bought a bunch of Wild Bunch gear hoping to start that endeavor, but alas it doesn't look like it's to be. So that means I have an extra Rock Island 1911 45 with six mags, an 1897 copy (that will hold 6 rounds in the mag tube), a leather rig for Wild Bunch with 50" belt, holster and two double mag pouches made by Buffalo Brady Leather, and just because I also have a Sig Sauer P232. All guns are unfired and all gear is brand new. It looks like the closest thing to a gun shop this town has to offer is a pawn shop so at least I'll have an FFL to ship and receive, but I'm in a quandary as to what to do with my gear as the number of cowboy types in this area are few and far between? Any suggestions? I do think that I will now stick to 45 LC from now on (my SASS caliber) and would like to pick up an Uberti El Patron or something similar in the future. Any suggestions will be read and appreciated. Smithy. Quote
Guest Sheriff Pack Wolf, SASS #31917 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 I feel for you Smithy,...I was thinking the same thing when I started sinking money into my outfit. One of the reasons I went Modern. Then I shot two lost brass matches and wow!, did it cost a lot to shoot. At least the SASS classifieds may help you. Quote

Heck lots of shooters skip the closest place to shoot and drive a bit to a better place to shoot in their opinion. Looks like you need to do a bit of research before throwing in the towel. Quote
Captain Woodrow Cahill, SASS # 54363 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 (edited) Don't go doing anything rash Smithy. Just because they're not doing Wild Bunch this year doesn't mean it won't happen in the future. If you make it to any of the big shoots - annuals, state, or regional - there's a 99% chance they'll at least have WB as a side match. Then you'll get to play. And as GCK notes, there's got to be another club somewhere nearby that does WB, and shoots more often than every two or three months. Jake McCoy Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 You might want to contact Two Rivers Posse in Manteca Ca just North and West of you location 209-836-4042. There is also a club in Clovis Ca South of you Snakebite is the TG. They are not that far as they are Freeway miles. The SASS shooters that live in the Bay Area drive to both these clubs plus up to Sacramento. Good Luck in your search Jake Quote
Grizzly Dave Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Smithy, bummer Pard, but to help ya out, I'll take it all off your hands for $100 and I'll even clean out the change jar and couch cushions and pay the shipping. Let me know where to send the money. I'm on the waiting list for my local club, last I checked they said only another 8 years or so at the current rate. Thankfully I don't have to be a member to shoot matches there. Grizz Quote
Adirondack Jack, SASS #53440 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 (edited) Smithy has transport issues, (doesn't drive), but still, living that close to HWY 99 (I know right where ya are, did most of my USAF stint at Castle AFB), there HAS TO BE a cowpoke or three that drive right by enroute to other shoots...... Smithy Posted March 25, 2011 Author Posted March 25, 2011 Thanks guys, I'll do some more looking. I guess I shouldn't have put all my eggs in this one range basket, but it was so darn close to my house. I don't know, they still may have an opening yet but their cowboy shooting leaves something to be desired. Smithy. Quote

Go to the range once or twice a week and shoot WB scenarios and I'll bet you dollars to donuts that you will have people watching. If there are cowboys already shooting in the matches invite them to "special" events. Make it happen; I'm sure you'll get a good response. DD Quote
Dubious Don #56333 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Murphy says, (you know, that guy that hangs around sometimes and likes to throw monkey wrenches in the gears?) that as soon as you sell them wild bunch shooters, that "club" will start shooting WB or you'll find a club close enough that does. Unless you're hard up for cash, I'd say keep'em. Of course with a pawn shop nearby, you might make use of their "loan" services. I've never understood the reasoning behind why "clubs" limit their members. More people = more dough into the club for improvements and such. I suppose it is one way to control overcrowding or something like that; if there's another reason maybe someone could enlighten us? Quote
Jefro, SASS#69420 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 (edited) Any suggestions will be read and appreciated. Smithy. Smithy, my suggestion would be to check out Ca. SASS Affiliated Clubs. Then go to Google Maps and type in the names of the cities, then hit "directions" and see what pops up. Just for fun I went through the first dozen or so, and found 5 matches within 1hr-42min to 2hr-7min of you, two that offer Wild Bunch. There are about 40 more clubs listed. Do a little research pard, Good Luck Lucerne 1hr-42min Sloughouse 1hr 54min Morgan Hill 2hr San Jose 2hr 7min WB Sloughouse again WB Jefro Edited March 25, 2011 by Jefro, SASS#69420 Quote
