Captain Woodrow Cahill, SASS # 54363 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I just loaded up 2400 rounds with 777 using my Lee Disk unit. No problems at all. Also loaded up 150 rounds using my Lee Perfect unit with 777 and Pyrodex, and 250 shotshells using my LoadAll with Pyrodex. One trick I found with the disks - I used a large countersink to chamfer the edges of the holes to eliminate powder bridging and shearing. Works a lot better. Quote

The issue you will face with some and it depends on the measure is erratic charges from bridging, clumping and such or (in the case of APP) the fine dust in that powder seems to choke some measures. The issue of real BP in powder measures is the possibility of static or steel parts within the measure causing a spark that sets off the powder. Hmmm, if steel measures were a sparking issue wouldn't that be a worry with regular powders? If static electricity is a problem with plastic measure parts why do they ship subs and BP in plastic bottles? Most measures can have their plastic hoppers replaced and since quite a few are made of non-sparking metals.... Numerous "tests" have been done regarding static electricity and real BP. I'm not sure I put much faith in them. I run APP, Pyrodex and 777 whrough my selection of RCBS, Dillon and Redding measures without a problem. Quote
Fingers McGee Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I've used blackpowder, APP, T7 and Pinnacle in my Hornady L-N-L progressive with the smokeless powder measure for a number of years with no untoward effects other than the dust jamming the rotor up after a couple hundred rounds with APP. "When loading cartridges with Pyrodex or Triple Seven, you may use a powder measure designed for smokeless powders." Note added 3/23/2001: I've run both of these products through a Lyman powder measure without any corrosion of the measure. Peddler Parsons SASS # 31281 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I have used a Lee Load-All and niw a Mec Jr 12 for my shotgun with Goex and a Lee 1000 at first and now a Dillon 550 with APP, 777, Pyrodex, and some Goex for the last 8 years and have had now trouble, just keep things clean as you go and when you get done. Slowhand Bob, 24229 Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I use the Hornady LNL powder measure for APP regularly and have no problems with it beyond the need for extra care protecting against corrosion. You must clean up well after each loading session or the subs will cause rust just as quickl as the real bp in your press, and yes I have on occasion used real bp in my Hornady. Since there is little to no metal in the LEE you should primarily be cleaning to keep down dust and residue. I have been using grits in my 44-40 sub loads for several years now and this has been the real fly in the ointment for loading on the auto press. The residue in grits will really bog down a powder measure quickly and the little LEE Perfect measure is the only game in town for this job. (I actually load my 44-40 rounds down to around 25grs of APP and this is a really big cost savings when you couple it with the fact that those specially lubed bullets are no longer needed.) Quote

Hodgdon spent a lot of money proving Pyrodex and 777 are okay, and APP's website okays APP. If you still have any Pinnacle, follow APP's guidelines. Edited March 23, 2011 by Capt.
