Stoeger Sear Springs

I have a 20 gauge Stoeger. I did the trigger switch mod with no problem, swapped the firing pins for stainless and honed the chambers. The gun has always refused the right barrell from time to time. I see some of the reasons that can happen here but I think mine might be sear spring related. When I look into the channel where the springs lay, the left one always migrates over against the right one. There does not seem to be any bend in it, but could be a "stiffness" issue? When I install them they lay perfect until I cock it a couple times and then they get "tangled". Any body run accross this one? The right side will either refuse or both barrels will sometimes go if the back trigger is pulled first. Is it as simple as new springs? Brownells have them? I appriciate any thoughts on this.

When you swapped the sears, did you move the right side sear spring to the left side? Looking at photos 25 and 46 of the swap article, it appears that the wrap, (each are wrapped differently), of the right side sear spring is the same from before and after the modification. Maybe reversed springs are your problem. Nota John

I never switched them myself but I was thinking that if someone had it apart in the past?? Who knows. We got the darn thing working so good now, we have to find the fix! I'll look at the diagram again and try again. I can't seem to find new ones on the web. Don't seem to be in Brownells. Still looking for them. Also we considered making a "bushing" to put on the pin between the springs. I don't have another gun handy here to compare right now. In any case, it's coming apart again after coffee!

Thanks....Zeke

I had a problem with my Stoeger a little while ago and was having trouble finding parts. I ended up getting them from an SASS member named Goatneck Clem who smiths Stoegers. I told him what I needed and gave him my address and a couple of days later I had the parts. Easy to do business with. If you do a member search on the board you should be able to find his contact information.

Nota John:

The plot thickens! I put those springs in reversed (to what I think is correct) Looking back at fig 25, and 47 in particular, would you say that the long end of the spring would come back to the rear oriented so that it is in the center of the channel. That is the way that I am seeing it in the diagrams and that is the way that they came out, however! As they are installed now, with the long end outboard on both the left and right, she is working good! I dry fired 50 times, back trigger first and no double fires. I can see enough in there that the left spring is not laying against the other which was causing that sear to lift as well.

I'll be at the range tonight and fire a box to confirm. The only thing that I can forsee left now is that right barrell refusing. I should have the answer to that tonight as well! I miss the old days here when we could shoot in the back yard!

I would look forward to your final thoughts on this "NJ" and I appriecate the help.

I'll track him down and get some spare parts. As you say parts seem to be limited. What did we ever do before the web!

Zeak, to my tired eyes, the photos show the long end of the springs to the inside of the frame. However, if everything is working with them reversed, go for it. Keep us informed as to your test results. Yours. Nota John

We'll we agree on that. We took the gun along with us tonight. I fired a few through it (maybe 20) and worked flawlessly. Another nice surprize was that the right barrell never refused so that might have been part of the same issue. We're going to take a couple boxes out next week and put 50 through it. If it passes that test, we can shoot with confidence! Working the way it does now, it is a fun gun to shoot. We put stainless steel firing pins it it, honed the chambers so that the hulls just "fall" out and of course the trigger swap. I am not a smith, but handy enough that we did it all ourselves.

I'll drop another note after next weeks session and let you know where we are then.

Cheers,

A little late getting back on but I would dare to say that the double is fixed. We put the heavier spring back in and that seemed to cure the misfires. Had to grind a little more off the trigger (re trigger switch)and that cured the both barrells firing. We fired 2 boxes of federal target loads and no issues at all. Hulls are falling out so what more is there?

We have a great resourse here indeed. In our area, you have to fix it yourself so it is good to be able to draw on people who have been there....Thanks.

We'll talk again!
