Pappy Gan Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Howdy, I bought a new marlin 39a 22 cal. It came with lots of problems, missing scope mount screw, failure to extract, really bad metal to wood fit, gritty action, but at the moment, the most aggravating thing is that I can't get it back together. It is supposed to be a take down. Take down was a little sticky, but not a big deal. Now it won't go back together,have followed all the instructions to the endth degree. It seems to be a problem with the lever fitting. If I take the lever off, it goes together fine Have tried the lever in the all positions from closed as recommended to partial open as suggested by others. I hestiate to put any muscle on it or a hammer. All ideas accepted. I have written Marlin, but don't expect to get any answers soon, can't get them on the phone. Quote

Then it goes together (last bit) with a wrap on the side with my hand only. Make sure the bolt is as far forward as it will go. Quote

Yep, the trick on mine is that I have to press forward on the back end of the bolt as I close the two sides of the frame back together, as the bolt tends to pop back about 1/4 inch from being fully closed, when there is no pressure on it. Grizzly Dave Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I bought one used 26 years ago or so. With cheap ammo it likes to jam, new round coming in before fired one ejected, so I've broke it down alot. Seems like nose the front end in and wiggle is what works for me. Of course each time I have to fiddle with it a bit to remember lever open or closed, bolt position etc. Fun little rifle when it's running good. Quote
Sierra Steve Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Bought one new a couple of years ago and it frequently failed to extract. But I wrote Marlin with full details, etc and they had me ship it back to them. What ever they did, they repaired and returned it without charge. It works fine now and have had no problems with it. Only rap I have is that its pretty heavy to carry around compared to my old pump 22 or say the little Browning 22 lever action. As far as reassembly, the angle comment and bolt comment above are what I'd also say. You can always go to a gunsmith for a lesson on take down and reassembly. Might be worth a few bucks to reduce the frustration level. Quote
