Nota John, SASS #51089L Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Question for the pards that have read the book. Does the book mention which eye the patch was on? Curious mind wishes to know. Thanks. Nota John
Deacon Will Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 In the book.... he had a 'bad' eye, but no patch. I understand it was Wayne'sidea. Then on the other hand..... http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/12/21/true-grit-then-and-now-political-eye-patches-and-a-girl-named/
Captain Woodrow Cahill, SASS # 54363 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 The story I heard said Wayne originally objected to the eye patch because "I don't want to look like no damn pirate". After he won the Oscar, he said "If I had known this is all it would take (holding up both eye patch and statue) I would've started wearing one 30 years ago".
Wrangler Rich SASS #42157 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I think I heard somewhere, probably here, that JW wore the patch in tribute to John Ford, and Jeff Bridges wore it over the opposite eye in tribute to John Wayne.
The Original Bad Bob Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Wayne's eye patch was actually made of black screen. He could see through it. He objected to having no depth perception, so the costumer made that for him.
Ken K Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I think I heard somewhere, probably here, that JW wore the patch in tribute to John Ford, and Jeff Bridges wore it over the opposite eye in tribute to John Wayne. Here is a link to both photos!! http://www.blogcdn.com/www.politicsdaily.com/media/2010/12/true-grit-wayne-bridges-427mh1221.jpg KK

Charlie Plasters, SASS#60943 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Just read this weekend that Bridges said he tried the patch over both eyes and it just felt better on the right one
J.J. Helms Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Mattie calls Cogburn a "one-eyed jasper"...that's all I can find quickly in my copy of the book. There may be more description, I just didn't come across it with a quick skim of the first portion of the novel. J.J.
