Never shot one, but given the opportunity, I certainly would. Any firearm interests me. Just don't have the finances to buy all I would like to have.

I admit they are ugly, and I never said they were better than any Americian military weapon, just that they are fun to shoot. Here is what mine looks like. I took some of the ugly off.

After 40 years as a mech engr with a large mfg co,I retired, but a friend who has a gunshop ask If I would do some gunwork part time and I've been at it for about 10 years now and enjoy most of it, and have had my hands on 75 or 100 ak's and sks's, repairing and trying to redo Putz gunwork done with mostly a hammer n screwdrivers. They are quite to tear down and put right,

Most are stocks and so called up dates that are in question.

When they leave the shop they do work, I have some one who does tests that also works at the shop.

That being said gives me no reason to shoot or own one..

I can see how they would be fun to shoot, but I'd not stake my life on one.. Now a 1911 thats my choice..

It is my hope I havent shook up folkx here, although I'm sure I have..

My SKS takes AK47 magazines. I have two 75rd. AK drum mags that feed perfectly in my AK. All of my regular magazines work well in both rifles, so I'm planning to relieve the stock on the SKS to clear the drum and see if the drum works as well in it. Anybody tried this before? If so, how'd it do?

Ya haven't shook me up.

And I would stake my life on one over my 1911...

...at ranges over 50 yards anyways.

+1 there U.B. My SKS is an all weather all climate weapon with the durability and ruggedness of my 1911. In a WTSHTF situation I'd prefer my AK for a rifle for much the same reason as I prefer my 1911 for a side arm. I know there have been major advances in the AR15/16 platform and it is a marvelous weapon, but for down and dirty combat conditions the AK47 is still the gold standard in the eyes of most experts. My next want is some range time with the MP5.

I have a SKS that my cousin gave to me a few years ago and I have never shot it. I do not know much about the gun and really have not took the time to learn about it. I told my oldest boy that it would be hin gun when he is older since his initials is SKS.

UB, I tend to agree with you, but If the bad guys come, and I hope they don't, I usually keep at least 4 shotgunz at close to hand all 97's with no mag plugs and all with #4's all new factory stuff each year, this is my wife's preferred weapons shes an old ranch girl from Colo, and she and I can use them fairly good. In my area I'd not use a rifle of any kind, to many neighbors.

Nothing like the noise a 97 makes when it is shucked...

Mrs Logan has MS and cant use a revolver any more, although she used to compete in PPC with me from 1966 till I quite in 2000.

She used a Bill Davis double action only for a lotta years, 7, 15' 25' and 50 yards, quite fun it was.. she still keeps a Colt diamond back close at hand.. more to look at than to use...

We feel lucky to live in an area where not much crime is about, and try not to put our selves in a spot where we feel uncomfortable.

Even at my age I would hate to take a life.. but......

didnt to mean to rant... seen enough blood.... even at the range sthe sound of an AK gives me the crapes.

I haven't fired an SKS either. Haven't had one close enough to get holt of. I don't care so much where a weapon is from, just does it shoot, and how well can I shoot it.

I'm not rollin in dough, so I get what I can afford. I just haven't been where there was an SKS for sale, when I had the cash at hand. Maybe someday, but until then, I'll be watchin down the firing line at what others are shootin.

Never held one in my hand, much less shot one, but an AK is on my "bucket list" of guns to own before I kick the bucket!

Might hafta get Hair Trigger Floyd to check Larry's Pistol & Pawn and see what they got in stock.

Well, that was just a choice between a 1911 and SKS if they were whut was layin about. I'd prefer a Springfield Armory or an AK over the SKS if they were available. I'd prefer a Remington 870 over a '97 but whatever throws projectiles with noise and violencewill work for me.

Its the poor mans Mini-14 or was! Paid 65 bucks for it. The perfect truck rifle for coyotes, feral dogs and hogs, and even two legged skunks if it calls for it.

With a built in shish kabober if they get too close!

Took the shis kabober off, put a Fusion stock on added a $30 Pro Point(On/Off switch needed tweaking) to it and use it as the back up to my back up deer gun.

Works just dandy up to aboot 125 yards. :excl:

My land has a lot of hills and most shots, while still hunting, are under 100yds.

I always laugh when "plinking" with the SKS 'cause you can hear and feel the bolt operating.Goofy

Fun gun for the money. Would probably take the K-31 for it's accuracy but durn thing is heavy.Same with all of my military rifles. FN-49, FN-FAL and Moisen..Moisin?? Russkie artillery thing. ;)

P.S. Maybe half of my after market mags(plastic and metal) are reliable.

I bought an SKS with a folding stock several years back for my Pop. He loved the thang but only shot it a few times. Seems the brand new 30 rd mag was a peice of crap and wouldn't feed from one side. Tried everything but it wouldn't go bang twice in a row with that mag. Bought factory fixed 10rd mag and haven't had any feed problems since.

Got the riflke back after Pop passed and get it out from time to time. Need to either mount a scope on it orone of the peep sights I saw in Shotgun news.

If ya like old guns you need a C&R license. I got mine 12 yrs ago and bought several old military guns and then quit once I got the SASS bug. But I've bought 3 old shotguns, including my 97 with my C&R off gunbroker for a very good price because I didn't have to go thru a dealer. 30 bucks every 3 years ain't bad. ;)

I have three Mosins. A 91/30 Ministry of Defense rifle, an M38 carbine, and a Finn M39.

The M38 is a flame thrower. With Hungarian heavy ball machine gun ammo, it will shoot a two foot flame out the front (and practically rip your shoulder off). It is a crowd pleaser at the range.

The Finn M39 is a fantastic shooter. The Finns rebuilt Russian Mosins in the early 40's by putting a heavy target barrel, heavy stock, and a better trigger on them. The results are amazingly accurate rifles. The first time that I shot my Finn at the range, I couldn't believe it. 4 out of 5 rounds touching at 100 yards shooting off of sandbags with iron sights. This was an 1896 Russian Mosin, rebuilt by the Finns in 1942, shooting 50's surplus Czech ammo!

Mosins are great! 7.62 X 54 is a nice caliber too; I believe that it is the longest serving military caliber in the world.

I have a Russian made one, primarily for a stash gun. It shoots like a house afire with FMJ, but for some reason won't feed hollow points worth beans. Of course at the time I bought it that's mostly what was available, but I did buy up a pretty good supply of S&B FMJs over a period of time.

I'm a 1911 man too, but WTSHTF I'd still rather have a rifle, even an SKS. I'm not a huge fan of the 7.62 x 39, but out to a couple hundred yards you could make the water pretty hot for a bad guy.

It's probably a myth, but supposedly there was a grave marker somewhere in the old west, Tombstone maybe, that read "Here lies a damn fool, tried to pistol shoot a man with a Winchester." I figure you could substitute SKS pretty easily.

I was awaiting your entrance stage right with such an awesome weapon.

Have you ever discussed a contract to make a movie about the Great War?

Don't try this at home children. Bob is a professional.

I got no problem with that...but I'll take serious exception at anyone shooting one of our cowboy targets with a 7.62 round.

Yeah, me too. We could shoot up some old plastic buckets if anybody has some old busted ones or something like that.

I got two pallets stacked shoulder high of 1 liter bottles of water that has passed their "use by" date. Ain't plannin' on drinking them, but they make fine targets for centerfire rifle rounds ;)
