Sad news. However, I wonder about the wisdom of sailing in a small boat in such waters in light of the recent issues. Even a well armed vessel of that size would be in jeopard. Nonetheless, my prayers for the family and friends of all aboard.

Seems to me that President Jefferson had a similar problem in that area of the world. The Marine Hymm reminds us of it.

What an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity! To be able to observe the different values of the peaceful Somalis and realize that yes, there truly is no right or wrong, only differences.

Up in the Med, actually. But I agree with the folly of taking an unarmed pleasure craft into those waters.

Military officials told NBC News that about 1 a.m. ET shots were heard aboard the yacht, called Quest. Negotiations had been under way with the pirates at the time.

The officials said U.S. military personnel boarded the yacht and discovered all four hostages had been shot by their captors.

The officials said two pirates were killed and 13 others captured after a brief gun battle as U.S. forces took control of the boat.

"We express our deepest condolences for the innocent lives callously lost aboard the Quest," Gen. James N. Mattis, U.S. Central Command Commander, said in a statement.

Two pirates already dead

The statement added that in addition to the 15 dead or captured pirates, U.S. forces had found the remains of two pirates on the vessel who were already dead. It did not say how they had died.

At this point, any US M/V that requests should be issued letters of marque and reprisal and the US Navy should initiate unrestricted surface warfare against pirate vessels. Wouldn't hurt to outfit some Q-ships.

Should do like th eRussians did. Hand cuff 'em to the boat and sink it.

They will be brought here and given a trial at millions of dollars of taxpayer’s expense. The apologists will make excuses as to why they had no choice but to be pirates and provide them with the best attorneys that our money can buy. Then we will incarcerate them again at taxpayer’s expense in better conditions than they ever had at home.

The Russians had the right idea, I’d go it one better just toss their asses into the sea and let them swim. Even the sharks have to eat

Being a girl I have a soft side in my heart for those who need help. But being an adult I know that some people don't understand the difference between right an wrong until there is a stiff punishment. The message should be we will SINK all found pirates ships, and we are LOOKING for them, not just waiting for something to happen. It is not just these two couples, this is becoming a real problem.

Hi All,

The Somali pirate situation makes me so mad.

I would like to know how they are "blackmailing" us to leave them alone. Also, do we give their government money? Are we afraid of world opinion?

:angry::angry::angry:

Regards,

PS Okie, I'd agree but that might be political.;)

There comes a time when we need to make some examples that leave a searing and lasting impression!

If we were to video a few keel haulings and post them on the www, perhaps the message might be received!

You folks are so hard. These sweet little skinny pirates had a difficult childhood and are just trying to get a little money so they can buy a few cups of rice for their dear little old starving mother. Just show a little understanding and they'll see the error of their ways and get on the straight and narrow.

I think the benefit of reason is no longer valid when dealing with the pirates. There is a lot of big money to be made from ransom. They have armed young men with no formal education or military training, and who have very little to lose but their lives, willing to use violence to attain some manner of monetary gain buy intimidating those that are weaker than they are. I am talking arms here.

Piracy has become a way of life for most of these scoundrels. It gives them the money to buy what they need to keep practicing their trade. They, for the most part, have very little regard for the suffering and troubles of others. Law of the jungle if you will.

Tie their hands, add some rocks or lead and make them walk the plank. Sink their vessel. end of story

.... let them see their vessel sink .... from up real close ... chained to the poop deck (of their own vessel)

It is Tragic, what was even more amazing was the fact that over 30 vessel's and 600 people are being held for ransom right now as we speak.

When captured lets say 12, you will need 24 sets of hand cuffs, 12 very dull hand saws, The wood type, cuf one leg n one arm opisit side to a pipe, then set the ship ablaze...or just let it drift close to their base, or better yet beach it after setting it a blaze..

Pirates are another name for terrorist only pirates are in it for the money.

All those drone planes we have, any ship or boat flying the US colors should be escorted by one. If an unauthorized boat comes near a US ship, it simply disappears. The pirates will learn to leave US ships alone. That or let the Navy boys have some fun and purpose rather than chugging around in circles doing exercises. Have them go out and exercise a Somali ship. I think a couple of submarine patrols, SUPRISE! ought to get their attention. If they worked as hard at cleaning up their country to invite investments and tourists they would make many peoples standard of living better. The best they can do now is fish food.

Unfortunately, there are a few realities that many overlook. The pirates have nothing to lose. Without piracy, there existence is so bleak, that death is not the feared alternative that it is in the civilized world. Without ransom being paid, they would continue piracy if for nothing more than the contents of the ships. Quit paying the ransom and the pirates will kill all people they attack. They don't fear us and given what there alternatives are, I doubt they ever will. Therefore, I submit, there is no course of action that will effectively dissuade the Somali pirates.

If you cannot dissuade them, then there remain but two alternatives

Accept the losses

or

eliminate them until no more Somali's choose the profession of piracy.

Afte the first hijacking intervention in Mogdiscio (Somalia) a few years ago, Col. Wegener of the German GSG said that no terrorist should survive the rescue. A sentiment I am in total agreement with. Why do we have 13 prisoners?

News reports said this incident happened 300 miles off the Somali coast. There has to be a mother ship somwhere nearby. In this age of sattelite surveillance and advanced radar, it should be easily found. If we lack the will to do what is necessary, report the position to the Russian or Chinese navies in the area. I guarantee they'll take the proper steps.

I am certain that option #1 will not work. The losses, without restrictions, will escalate until

they are no longer acceptable. In fact I find them unacceptable at this point.

Option #2 seems. to me at least, a better option.

Perhaps we need to target the "fishing" village docks and beaches where these folks park their dilapidated boats and teach these Skinnies a lesson. No quarter for piracy has been given in the past, so why now? If in fact they have ties to Muslim terrorist groups, perhaps the sight of a yacht full of Bibles was too much for them to handle, and why these Americans were murdered.

I still have buddies in Army Aviation who remember the days in Mogadishu, and that is one rotten place.

You have a point....so I will not charge their beneficiaries for the use of the rope...
