Curley Cole, SASS #56849 Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Well Just finished wathcing the Westener with Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. Ol' Walter played a passable Judge Roy Bean.(even got a best supporting Oscar fer it.) While they were pretty loose with history, some of the gear was "pre Hollywood". Lots of gun rigs that would fit right in with Packin Iron. No drop holsters...I even saw one guy with a Bisely in his holster. But most of the rest of the guns were Colts..Some stags, some MOP... anyone else notice any details, good or bad from this movie??? I may have to get a copy and watch the whole dang thing.. curley who is late in runnin his errands now. Quote

Remo, SASS #17644 Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) Yes, it was the first Western movie in which Levi's were used and I believe Cooper had rolled up leg cuffs. Edited February 19, 2011 by Remo, SASS #17644 Quote
Push the button Wyatt Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Yes, it was the first Western movie in which Levi's were used and I believe Cooper had rolled up leg cuffs. That could be. But how about the early John Wayne flicks. Like in the mid 30's Wayne wore Levis, with rolled up cuffs.? Quote
Little Henry Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I can't believe the timing of this topic. I just rented and watched The Westerner from Netflix. It is a great Non-Hollywood-ized Western. The story is Hollywood, complete with happy ending, but the sets and equipment were VERY real. Even the tactics of the gunfight at the Opera house were more real than the standard Hollywood "quick draw in the street" hooey. Saw Winchester '73's that were probably the real deal and not too far out of production in 1940 (probably filmed in 1939). The last one was made in 1923. Several Colts and a Bisley. I thought I even saw a Thunderer. All of the holsters were authentic -- no drop loop Hollywood Buscaderos. Gary Cooper's SAA had white pearl grips -- it was obvious even in black & white. Even the Judge's civil war uniform had moth holes and tears in it (it would have been 20 years old in 1882 when this was set). I loved it when he stood before the poster of Lily Langtry in his CSA dress greys and sabre at attention and saluted her! Chill Wills, Walter Brennan, Dana Andrews & Forrest Tucker were in this one -- great actors and a very entertaining movie!!!! By the way, the REAL Judge Roy Bean was from Mason County, KY and did many things in his life to not only survive, but prosper. AND, he WAS in the Confederate Army! He ran cotten through Union blockades from San Antonio to British ships moored at Matamoros, Old Mexico serving the CSA and making a buck. And then, the 1880's made the man a legend. Don't ever underestimate a Kentuckian! Quote
