Short-stroke kit needed

Tom Bullweed

Recommended Posts

Winter is going to break soon here in NC and it will be time to shoot more often than the occassional match. I have wiated too late to send my '73 Uberti off for short-stroke work. Is there a drop-in kit available? I need sources and your experience with such.

What AJ said.

If you are pretty handy mechanically, you could do it.

Since the short stroke slightly changes the mechanical advantage of the lever, a good action job is needed. I some have installed the short stroke and been frustrated by how much harder the lever action was.

And if you mess up, you can buy most replacement parts, although not cheaply.

Check with The Ottway Smith (Ron Snover) in TN. He is close and may be able to do the job fairly quickly.

Or you can give the other well know smiths a call to see if they can give a fairly quick turn around, but with Winter Range coming soon....

I said that I 'need a source'. I 'want' the shorter action.

My Uberti simply has much more lever travel than the original Winchester. My original opens to about 80-85 degrees; my Uberti opens well past 90 degrees.

I do not want a stroke kit that pushes up against SASS rules, but I would like one that is closer to an original.

I will likely never be a contender, so it is simply a matter of getting the Italian copy closer to my circa-1890, untuned Model 1873.

Then you don't want this 5th generation short stroke. If I were you, I'd post in classifieds looking for a third generation short stroke or earlier. I could be wrong, but I think any short stroke is going to take you shorter than your original gun. Personally, if I were short stroking it, I'd get the 5th generation. Why? Because a Vette is fun to drive even if you don't keep the accelerator on the floor.

Bulls Head Bill, Ron was visiting daughter and grandchild in Pennsylvania when his wife fell down stairs broke her tibia & fibula and had to have surgery. 10 day visit turned in to a month. Ron doesn't have a laptop. Try reaching him again at 423-234-0184 or rwsnover@comcast.net

Tom Bulweed I would second Ottway Smith he produces the best 3rd generation kit short stroke kit. They generaly do need to be fitted to run the smoothest.

Howdy

A little bit off topic. Do you think you could take a photograph of your original '73 with the lever completely open as far as it will go? I am trying to gather photos of how far the originals actually opened. If you can do so, please shoot me a PM and I will give you an email address to send it to.

Thanks

I understand and withdraw my prior post accordingly. ;)

Now I'm really suprised Driftwood didn't jump in with this advice....

To really get the benefit of a good short stroke kit, the rifle needs to have action work done 1st. When you shorten the stroke you need to work harder to move the parts with the lever. With a slicked up action a short stroke kit really shines.

Hope that helps,
