Well pards, the title says it all. Is the Ruger Single Six, in .32 mag, legal for pocket pistol side matches?

Thanks,

Boondock

Not to be a pain in the butt, but seeking understanding...

The last line on page 17 SHB under pocket pistols reads

".22 Magnum ammunition is not allowed."

The original post asked about a .32 mag.

I have no clue if it fails on other counts as well, just trying to understand.

The 32 Vaquerito is a legal MAIN match revolver.

Therefore, that makes it ILLegal for pocket pistol side matches.

I don't know of any SAA clone framed revolver that is legal for pocket pistol.

The last line under the "Pocket pistol"-specific regs that I was referring to is

"Pocket pistols may not be used as or converted to main match revolvers."

The .22 magnum "bullet" refers specifically to DERRINGERS.

(the minimum caliber for pocket pistols is .31 cal)

ok, just out of curiosity, I want to run out and buy myself a brand new pocket pistol just to shoot in side matches. What manufacture, model, will I be looking for.

thanks

Your best bet would be to find the rare Long Shot, produced by a Chinese firm Taintnoway.

Equally as good and elusive is the Slim and Nun series, a his and her set featuring Slim Pickens and Mother Theresa.

See you this weekend, Lord willin and the Creek don't rise(too much)!

Thanks guys, at least now I've got some options to look at. I really like the looks of the Wells Fargo/ 1849 pocket, with the conversion it would be a little pricey...! but I didn't ask what would be the least expensive route did I ?

Goody, I looked at the Chinese "Taintnoways" the only pocket model I saw was the "Sum Ting Wongs"

Help me out here.

If a baby dragoon with a .32 cartridge conversion can be used main match with a 4+ inch barrel and pocket pistol with a 4- inch barrel, why can not the same be true of the Vaquarito?

Thanks,

Rod

The "Vaquerito" is on the list of "Other Approved Firearms" (for main match use).

As such, it is ONLY legal as a "main match" gun in ANY barrel length.

There are no minimum barrel length restrictions for MAIN MATCH revolvers.

So if it was not on that list, how would you tell?

Most folks don't buy a new pocket pistol. They buy an old one made back in the time period which we are taking our inspiration from in this sport. That is typically a top-break double-action revolver like a Smith lemon-squeezer, H&R, IJ, Hopkins and Allen, etc. Chambered in .32 S&W or .38 S&W. Try to find the newer models of these that are strong enough for smokeless powder loads. You can find some of those in pretty good shape, very shootable, for $150 to $200; Smiths up to double that. And you won't have to mess with C&B loading, capping problems, cleanup, etc.

Be aware that there seems to be diminishing turnout at side matches (which are not held all that often anyway) for the pocket pistol event.

Good luck, GJ
