Fluting a 73 rifle?

I did some investigating on this barrel fluting. Lots of discussions out there, lots of companies who will do it. Did find a website from a gunsmithing company who posted pictures and results of their work.

On one rifle they straight fluted full length - from just ahead of the chamber to just shy of the muzzle - six flutes total - the weight reduction was 70 grams, or a whole 2.4 ounces. Half that number of flutes on half a barrel ... hardly seems worth it.

Seems the only thing that's going to be lighter is your wallet.

PaleWolf - thank you for the clarification.

The definition of "internal" does seem to be a rather broad one, at least in this context.

RE: any safety and/or liability concerns, the second paragraph of the "Firearm Covenants" addresses those issues:

SASS FIREARMS COVENANTS

...

Original and replicas may be used in competition provided they are in good, safe working order. In each of the respective sections, allowed modifications are listed. Just because a manufacturer designs a part or firearm for this sport or just because a firearm was available, does not necessarily mean it is legal for competition. Only the modifications referenced here as allowed are approved. All others are illegal. As any firearm related sport can be inherently dangerous, SASS does not recommend or suggest the modification of any firearm or the removal of any safety device. Participants in this sport accept responsibility for the use and/or modifications of their firearms and do not depend upon SASS or any of its affiliated clubs or members to make that judgment for them. Please consult with the firearm manufacturer prior to making any firearm modifications. Firearms must operate as intended by the original pre-1900 designs they depict. Firearms must function in a safe manner.

1st of all we really aren't talking about fluting here. It's a totally different cut. 2nd thing is there are other weak spots in these barrels as well. Ever heard of something called a dovetail? Yes I've seen barrels bulge at dovetails too. So do we need to be concerned about the dept of a dovetail cut?

Hath the eye of the Great Leviathan beheld a 44 mag 73?

Methinks that remains a mythical creature as of yet does it not?

No, it does not. Cimarron has them in stock.

I just presented my rationale within the bounds of available information. Not every lawyer wins every case. Heck, even if a weatherman is right 60% of the time he's considered to be a meteorlogical marvel. If somebody wants to spend the dough to shave the weight of a cigarette off their barrel, go ahead.
