Utah Bob #35998 Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I’m not a big fan of The Star Spangled Banner as our National Anthem, I’m one of those that prefers America The Beautiful, I think it says a whole lot more about what makes this country great. But The Star Spangled Banner is the anthem and should be preformed with the dignity and respect that it deserves. I tend to agree. I think America the Beautiful is a superior song.
Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Meg, I liked it! Joe, HL and the News seemed respectful but pitchy (as Randy Jackson would say). I didn't care for it. Great point folks about it being about the song not the artist and "creative license." Regards, Allie Mo
Gunner Gatlin, SASS 10274L Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I love all our songs about our wonderful country!! and no - that does not include derrogatory songs....as i am sure there some of those out there too GG ~

While I realize that the Star Spangled Banner is much more difficult for a solo singer to perform, I find it a much more beautiful piece of music, and the lyrics far more stirring than the simplistic and almost folksy America the Beautiful. While the latter stanzas of America the Beautiful get into the heart of the American spirit, the part that most people know is more about the scenery. The Star Spangled Banner, on the other hand, is about a tremendous historic event in our history, and the indomitability of that American spirit. Just my opinion. I might have to see if I can figure out how to load the recording I have of it done by my high school choir. I truly believe that is how it is meant to be performed.
Subdeacon Joe Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 On this one, I would respectfully disagree. On the other hand, those other verses of AtB are pretty darned good: O beautiful for pilgrim feet Whose stern impassion'd stress A thoroughfare for freedom beat Across the wilderness. America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law. 3. O beautiful for heroes prov'd In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life. America! America! May God thy gold refine Till all success be nobleness, And ev'ry gain divine. 4. O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam Undimmed by human tears. America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea. Whereas the 2nd and 3rd of the SSB are pretty contorted and a just a bit odd: On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. 4th verse is pretty good though. O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation. Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Kinda tough call. I'd weigh in slightly on AtB, I think the music carries more to the heart. Nothing says we can't have two.
Hoedown Hal SASS#27657 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Everytime I watch a mega even like the super bowl I always wonder why the NA isn't sung by a uniformed service person? There's gotta be at least one good singing voice out there at least as good as Rose Ann and the like..........

I think there have been a couple of suggestions of having it performed by a military ensemble.

Talent has nothing to do with it.
Badlands Bob #61228 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 American heroes! GG ~ That would have been a great improvement over what happened.
Gunner Gatlin, SASS 10274L Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I found this video I took of my daughter (in the pink and purple jacket) and her school singing group at a West Michigan Whitecaps game. Pretty proud of her ~ they did it justice I think. http://www.youtube.com/user/PJAgnew?feature=mhum#p/a/u/1/ueEwX8yyka8 GG ~
